DVD Description

This collection of Hitchcock classics features:

Dial M For Murder:
Classic Hitchcock movie starring Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. Ex-tennis pro Tony Wendice decides to murder his wife for her money and because she had an affair the year before. He blackmails an old college associate to strangle her, but when things go wrong he sees a way to turn events to his advantage.

I Confess:
Hitchcock movie starring Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter. Otto Kellar and his wife Alma work as caretaker and housekeeper at a Catholic church in Quebec. Whilst robbing a house where he sometimes works as a gardener, Otto is caught and kills the owner. Racked with guilt he heads back to the church where Father Michael Logan is working late. Otto confesses his crime, but when the police begin to suspect Father Logan he cannot reveal what he has been told in the confession.

Stage Fright:
Hitchcock movie starring Jane Wyman and Marlene Dietrich. Jonathan Cooper is wanted by the police who suspect him of killing his lover's husband. His friend Eve Gill offers to hide him and Jonathan explains to her that his lover, actress Charlotte Inwood is the real murderer. Eve decides to investigate for herself, but when she meets the detective in charge of the case, she starts to fall in love.

The Wrong Man:
Hitchcock movie starring Henry Fonda and Vera Miles. Manny Ballestero is an honest hardworking musician at New York's Stork Club. When his wife needs money for dental treatment, Manny goes to the local insurance office to borrow on her policy. Employees at the office mistake him for a hold-up man who robbed them the year before and the police are called. The film tells the true story of what happened to Manny and his family.

Strangers On A Train:
Based on the Patricia Highsmith novel, Strangers On A Train quickly became one of Alfred Hitchcock's most successful thrillers and remains one of his most popular films. En route from Washington, D.C., champion tennis player Guy Haines (Farley Granger) meets pushy playboy Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker). What begins as a chance encounter turns into a series of morbid confrontations, as Bruno manipulates his way into Guy's life. Bruno is eager to kill his father and knows Guy wants to marry a senator's daughter (Ruth Roman) but cannot get a divorce from his wife, Miriam (Laura Elliot). So Bruno suggests the men swap murders, which would leave no traceable clues or possible motives. Though Guy refuses, it will not be so easy to rid himself of the psychopathic Bruno. The film is tightly paced and disturbing from beginning to end, an effect heightened by Hitchcock's inventive camera work, including a terrifying sequence shot through a pair of eyeglasses that have been knocked to the ground.

North By Northwest:
North By Northwest is a suspense thriller that finds Cary Grant in the role of Roger Thornhill, a Manhattan advertising executive mistaken for a spy. Considered by many to be the prototypical pure action movie (creating the template for later James Bond and Indiana Jones films), the film is a cross-country roller-coaster ride with Alfred Hitchcock at the helm. The film is duly famous for several classic and indelible scenes, including the desert biplane encounter and the Mt. Rushmore climax.

Strangers On A Train: A battle of wits between tennis pro Guy and his mysterious, sycophantic admirer, Bruno arises when Bruno proposes a "criss-cross" scheme of traded murders. Bruno agrees to kill Guy's unfaithful wife, in return for which Guy will (or so it seems) kill Bruno's spiteful father.

This Hitchcock collection contains 6 his film: I Confess, Dial M For Murder, North By Northwest, Stage Fright, The Wrong Man, Strangers On A Train. Each film is restored and looks really good. I will look at each separately.

Strangers On A Train: This film comes in 2 disc version. There are 2 versions of the film. Original cut and preview version which has an alternate ending. Strangers On A Train is not my favorite of Hitchcock. I found it dull and not very interesting mostly because Farley Granger wasn't a compelling lead. The direction by the master was great but the bland lead just didn't work for me. The film is 4:3 aspect ratio not widescreen( don't believe the details on the box).

There are several extra features here: commentary by Peter Bogdanovich and other people, trailer on disc 1. On the disc 2 there are 4 featurettes on the film and Hitchcock.

Film: 3/5
Video/Audio: 4/5
Extras: 4/5

North By Northwest: Easily one the most entertaining Hitchcock's film. It's a classic chase thriller with a political conspiracy, double crossing, mistaken identities and so on. Cary Grant is brilliant in the roll and James Mason makes great villain in the film. Very fun film to watch. Also this film has the best video and audio quality in this box set.

Extra Features: Commentary by screenwriter Ernest Lehman, making of featurette, trailer, still gallery and TV spots.

Film: 5/5
Video/Audio: 5/5
Extras: 4/5

The Wrong Man: One of the most underrated Hitchcock's film. It's a true story about a man who's arrested for crimes he hasn't committed. Henry Fonda plays the every-man very well but the real star of the film is Vera Miles who gives a very underrated performance as wife goes through a mental breakdown. This is a very sad, dark film. It's not like any other Hitchcock film. The Wrong Man is slow, beautifully shot, extremely well acted and superbly directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Not for everyone but those who can appreciate it will love it.

Extra Features: Making of featurette and a trailer.

Film: 5/5
Video/Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3/5

Stage Fright: The weakest film in the set. A murder mystery set in London where drama student tries to clear a friend being framed for murder by becoming maid of stage star played by Marlene Dietrich. It's not a bad film, but just like Strangers on A Train it was boring. The problem is the same. The leading actors didn't carry the film for me. This film is not widescreen and color. It's in black and white and 4:3 aspect ratio( again box set is incorrect).

Extra Features: Making of featurette and a trailer.

Film: 3/5
Video/Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3/5

I Confess: Another story of a wrongfully accused man. This time a priests hears a confession of a man who has committed a murder. Later the priest becomes a prime suspect and can't don anything to save because of his vows to the church. It's an interesting film and some great performances. Montgomery Clift is great in leading role and the supporting cast includes Anne Baxter and Karl Malden. I Confess isn't Hitchcock's best film but it's a good one.

Extra Features: Making of featurette, trailer and 1 min long news reel from Canadian premiere.

Film: 4/5
Video/Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3/5

Dial M For Murder: My personal favorite film of this box set. An ex-tennis pro carries out a plot to murder his wife. When things go wrong, he improvises a brilliant plan B. Entire plot of the film for most of time happens in one flat. Despite this monotone setting it's never dull or boring. It's very suspenseful and entertaining. The dialog is very well written. And the actors does a great job. Ray Milland is superb as the diabolical husband. He is very charming, cool and so charismatic that you kinda root for him. Grace Kelly is also great in the role. She plays the cool blonde. Cold exterior with boiling emotions under it. John Williams is very good as the inspector and Robert Cummings as the bland writer lover. Overall this is a very good Hitchcock film. Probably my favorite one.

Extra Features: Making of featurette, 3D film: A brief history featurette and a trailer.

Film: 5/5
Video/Audio: 4/5
Extras: 3/5
*****************************************************************************************************************************

In Conclusion: This is box set is very good collection of Hitchcock's films. Here are some well known ones like Dial M For Murder and North By Northwest and lesser know ones like the The Wong Man. All the films come in very good video and audio quality and there are extra features for every single film. It's must have for Hitchcock fans. But for newcomers I suggest different collection with Hitchcock's most popular films like Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo and The Birds.

Another great collection of movies, all different and yet so highly entertaining in their own ways. To add to this, there is of course a masterful cast of actors and actresses , wonderful settings, and in all just about everything that you would expect from a top movie. If you are a lover of movies like I am, and the genre of these movies are all about keeping you in suspense from start to finish, you will be in for a treat when you see these movies.

A fantastic collection of (what I would consider) some of Hitchcock's best; `Dial M For Murder', `Stage Fright', `Strangers On A Train' and `North By Northwest' are just some of the fantastic films in this well put together box set. With behind the scenes and extras, original trailers and striking DVD disc art, and a fantastic collection of films this box set has been thoroughly packaged with a fan in mind. Anything you might have been missing from the larger 14 disc Alfred Hitchcock box set is found here (though 'To Catch a Thief' is still absent from both!). You won't be disappointed.
