Product Description

'Travelling the length of Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town, on folding bikes? Were we completely mad or had we come up with an idea that would prove to be the simplest and most fun way to travel?'

A Hitch-Biker's Guide Through Africa is the story of this extraordinary adventure, of two people with two folding bicycles who travelled the length of Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town. This African odyssey was a spur of the moment decision which didn't give the author and her partner much time to plan. They guessed that folding bicycles would allow for versatile travelling. The freedom of cycling could be backed up with public transport or hitching a ride, especially when distances were far and carrying enough water could be a problem. What they hadn't anticipated was just how easy the trip would prove to be.
In her first book, author Jo Charnock gives a first hand account of this incredible journey and the couple's often surprising adventures. After nearly six months on the road the trip ended with nothing but fantastic, positive experiences brought about by the people they met, and the unmatched natural beauty of Africa.

5.0 out of 5 stars Informative and a real page turner! 16 July 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
While reading this well written and informative book, I was completely taken away by this personal journey through Africa on folding bikes!!! In making the epic journey from Cairo to Cape Town, Africa's beauty and diversity is vividly portrayed along with the complexities of its bureaucracies, politics and, of course, roads. Finely observed story telling and informative!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Unique Travel Idea 23 Oct 2012
By Jbrune - Published on Amazon.com

This is a great book. I love travel adventures and ones with bicycles are my favorite. Jo and Jan invent a new type of adventure travel method, the "hitch-biker" way. They don't ride every mile, but they also don't focus on every breakdown or pain either. The folding bicycles provide a unique method of travel and is worth the price. My hope is that they will follow up with more adventures and inspire others to hitch-bike around the world.
4.0 out of 5 stars A novel concept for a travel story 12 Mar 2013
By Joseph Scalia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I downloaded the book mainly because I am interested in traveling by folding bike. The story is well written and entertaining but failed my expectation because it is mostly just a travelogue and pays little attention to the folding bike aspect. The reason I gave it a 4 star instead of a 3 star is because I am only half way through the book and my opinion may be changed by the latter half.
4.0 out of 5 stars clear and unaffected reflections of a cool journey through vast Africa 7 Jun 2012
By Anthony Berzack - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Jo captures the energies of this vast journey and getting lost in it all, as her and Jan took it on in a pure and unintrusive manner that compliments the essence of what Africa is about. I enjoyed gathering some insight to how it all goes down and their interesting and exciting ride through, as well as Jo's expression of this. I have had inspirations to do some kind of a trip through Africa that has not yet reached my threshold for action (the read certainly lures my threshold in a few notches).
