4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting concept 20 Oct 2011
I have had one of these Lifestudio drives for a few days now and am quite surprised by the negative remarks others have left.
Firstly this is probably one of the best designed external drives I have seen. The drive has two lights, one for the hard drive, and the other on the usb drive.
You can dock and use the usb drive simply by inserting it in the HDD casing, the light then comes on.
I am not quite sure why anyone would need instructions to do a backup - once you install the software, and get the update from Hitachi there are only about 3 items to check: 1. what you want to back up. 2 Date and time of the back up you want and 3. How many backups you wish to keep. After that the drive does it. I did not notice how long it took to back up, I did not even notice that it had backed up 37gb without me noticing.
Another nice touch is that the software tells you how much space is left on the drive.
Also you can specify to back up the USB key as it is docked on the HDD - not many people do that I am sure.
I haven't really got to grips with the media wall yet, it looks impressive and probably is.
Overall its a good looking drive that does what it says, quite efficiently.

I almost forgot to add - the USB key is 4GB - now on todays standard that is ok, but maybe 4GB isn't enough in a year's time. No problem, the USB drive is actually a micro SD card reader, so when you want a bigger USB drive you remove the micro SD card and insert one with more space - this is great !
You can also read the microSD card from your mobile and transfer files without going through your phone software. Nice one Hitachi!

1.0 out of 5 stars All fur coat and no knickers 22 April 2011
I hate having to write this as I was given this as a present by my wonderful partner who clearly put in a lot of thought about getting what looked like a premium product. Unfortunately, the reality is that this piece of kit is all fur coat and no knickers.

All I wanted was an external drive I could back up all my important files on and also my 2 kids could have separate areas to store their stuff.
Day one, I had to send it back to Hitachi as it wouldn't work: the USB key heated up dangerously hot and my PC wouldn't recognise it anyway. Then Hitachi sent me back a new hard drive but with no plugs, USB or leads! Finally, I got the whole thing (minus the miniscule instruction leaflet which is worthless anyway for what little it tells you.)

Got it up and running and it is extremely fancy but not at all user-friendly. It has facilities I simply don't want such as about 100 games and Facebook link-ups. There does not however appear to be a simple means of creating 3 user files so we can all store our stuff and try as I might, I can't find any instructions for basic usage such as this. Also, the USB key STILL heats up to a frightening degree when plugged into it so I would definitely not recommend leaving it unattended.

I started backing up my files (and I don't have a huge amount by most people's standards) over an hour ago and it's still whirring away - I only hope that, like the other unimpressed user, I won't get told insufficient space.....

Steer clear of this product - I also add that Hitachi's support dept were borderline rude and unhelpful with no apology for their product's failure or their lousy customer service.

2.0 out of 5 stars poor software 19 Feb 2011
By spike
I found it very difficult to get this software up and running. the only instructions enclosed with it was a small printed sheet which was hard to read because of the small print. Having installed it I found it hard to follow the on line instructions. It is certainly not intuitive. Having located my photos on lifestudio I could not find any way of printing the photos from the programme and there was no indication as to where on my computer the photos were located. I commenced the backup programme which took hours and finally came up with a message that there was insufficient space to complete the backup!! on what is a 1 terabyte drive!! I am afraid this is all too much for me.I have enough problems without all this so I am returning this item forthwith.
