G-DRIVE mini hard drives are the perfect storage solutions for people on the go. Weighing in at less than 250g, G-DRIVE mini is the ultra-portable and stylish way to travel with up to 500 GB of storage space for your important documents, MP3s, digital video and digital photo files. The system can withstand up to 1000 G's of shock* to ensure your data is protected against the bumps and bruises encountered on the road. G-DRIVE mini is bus powered, eliminating the need to carry an external AC power supply. Portability was never so easy! G-DRIVE mini features a fan-less cooling system the latest and technology 5400 or 7200 RPM hard drives.
*NOTE: Non-Operating shock. G-DRIVE mini can withstand 400G's operating shock.
Bus-Powered via Firewire
G-DRIVE mini is bus powered when attached to a 6 or 9-pin FireWire port. The USB port on some computers may not supply enough power to reliably operate G-DRIVE mini systems larger than 320 GB. For those cases, an optional power supply is available for use with G-DRIVE mini if your system does not have a FireWire port or your USB port does not provide adequate power.

I replaced a large desktop drive with this so that I could use it bus-powered and in the hope that it was quieter. It's certainly much quieter and takes up far less room. The design is very nice too and matches the new Mac Mini style, though the metal is a bit lighter in colour. With it being a 7200 rpm drive, it's just as fast as the large desktop drive and it's one of the few portable drive with a power switch on it so I can leave it plugged in and turn it off when I don't need to use it.
It's almost perfect for me except for a very annoying problem and that is that on occasions when I turn the drive on, it just doesn't mount. I wouldn't say it happens frequently (maybe 1 in 10 times) but when it does happen, I have to either power off/on the drive or sleep/wake my machine. In both cases, the drive has already started spinning and being bus-powered means both methods cut the power and make the drive clunk to a halt, which is not a good thing to have to do regularly. Suffice to say, I maintain a duplicate of the contents on another drive just in case.

very good product, if you keep in mind that macs do not have a usb 3 so it is most useful. delivery on time and as described.
... it's still a fast and reliable drive. I bought one last summer and, yes, it sometimes doesn't mount, though in my case it's because I do things in the wrong order like plugging it in switched on, but it's a small, sleek, fast and so far reliable external drive for laptop users. It comes with all the cables needed and a very useful case.

No bargepole long enough
I now have 3 G-Tech drives. A 1Tb G-Drive, A 2Tb G-Drive, and most recently a 500Gb G-Drive Mini. ALL of them umount for no apparent reason at random, and I get the 'device... Read more
