"A History of the World Since 9/11 takes us on an eminently readable and conversational trip through the complicated world surrounding the 9/11 attacks. Dominic Streatfield reveals the tragedy and confusion of events before, during, and after that tragic day unlike any other author."--John Kiriakou, author of "The Reluctant Spy: My Secret Life in the CIA's War on Terror"

"Bleak and gripping narrative...This excellent work will mesmerize readers of current history." - "Library Journal" (starred) "History that's vivid and insightful.""--Publishers Weekly""" "A tenacious reporter, Streatfeild packs the narrative with telling detail, instructive interviews and dramatic events"--"Kirkus

Product Description

In A History of the World Since 9/11 Dominic Streatfeild expertly combines history, biography and investigative journalism to show how a massacre on a clear September day in 2001 has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In a series of brilliantly interlinked chapters he shows how an Afghani wedding party; and a gas station proprietor in Texas; and a planespotter in Mallorca have been affected, sometimes devastatingly, by the American response to the attacks on the Twin Towers. Streatfeild shows how the sleep of reason and good sense in successive US administrations post-9/11 has brought forth the monsters of extraordinary rendition, Guantanamo Bay, extrajudicial execution and wholesale contravention of international law. This is a work that informs as it entertains and induces outrage as it inspires.

If you want to understand the magnitude of the lie that took us to war - this is the book for you. My copy arrived on Tuesday morning and I have hardly put the book down since! In fact, I've now downloaded the Kindle version - I found the chapters so thought provoking I keep going back for a re-read. From Chapter 1 through to Epilogue the author had me hooked and all I can say is if this doesn't stir Senator John Kerry into going after George W Bush and Dick Cheney then I don't know what will. I would also say if you are Australian, your HAVE to read Chapter 2: For those who come across the Seas, just to find out the nugget about Kim Beazley, the Prime Minister you nearly had...

The author's last book (Brainwash: The Secret History of Mind Control) may have been shortlisted for Samuel Johnson but this book deserves to win - its better.

This was the first book I've read by Dominic Streatfield. From the first few pages, I really liked his style - kind of a 'Pulp Fiction' in print, weaving different threads, which happily all come together by the end of the book. I liked this aspect the most. The book doesn't try to make many grand statements about the impact of 9/11 on the politics of various countries. Instead it follows a few small stories then pulls together common themes. It makes for an enjoyable, page-turning read, where I was really eager to find out what was coming next for each of the very personal stories.

It was also great to see quotes from various internal meetings of US and Australian politicians, in particular. I hadn't come across these elsewhere. Dominic's material from face-to-face discussions with the various people involved also help to liven the material. I found the parts on the roots of the whole Iraq's WMDs (or not) absolutely fascinating - and horrifying - in equal measure.

Overall, a really good read. One of those books I couldn't put down and had finished in under a week. In fact, I wouldn't have groaned at a few more chapters or threads. But what was there was more than enough to keep me both entertained and better informed. Really recommended!

To quote the intro to this book: "This isn't the story of 9/11. It's the story of what happened after 9/11. It's scarier."

This is a fascinating read. Dominic Streatfeild has managed to tell eight diverse, interlinking and incredibly engaging stories. His writing is superb. Anyone who cares about why we went to war and what happened afterwards should read this book. It is not a weighty, academic tome but some of the best journalism I've read in a while - like back-to-back, first class Vanity Fair articles (high praise from me as I subscribe to Vanity Fair). He hasn't focused on the much-covered major players such as Bush, Cheney and Blair but has talked to real people whose lives have been turned upside down by the aftermath of 9/11 and our response to it. Without doubt the best non-fiction book I've read in many years.
