Good new scholarship 16 Mar 2012

This book is good so far . Interesting and shows lots of parallels between the fall of the Roman Empire and the fall of our own American Empire. We are repeating some of the same mistakes, ei. Overtaxation, unsupportable foreign wars caused and started for egotistical reasons with no treasure gained but much lost or used up solely to aggrandize certain leaders egos, squandering of national mojo on unimportant pursuits while leaving pressing issues unaddressed. Hopefully the US and American spirit will have another surge but, all to often history does repeat itself. Good book if you want to most update take on the subject backed by apparently solid scholarship. Yeah.

I would have every man apply his mind seriously to consider these points, viz. what their life and what their manners were; through what men and by what measures, both in peace and in war, their empire was acquired[7] and extended; then, as discipline gradually declined, let him follow in his thoughts their morals, at first as slightly giving way, anon how they sunk more and more, then began to fall headlong, until he reaches the present times, when we can neither endure our vices, nor their remedies. "e;

The vestal Rhea, being deflowered by force, when she had brought forth twins, declares Mars to be the father of her illegitimate offspring, either because she believed it to be so, or because a god was a more creditable author of her offence. "e;
