Product Description

Anthropology is a discipline very conscious of its history, and Alan Barnard has written a clear, balanced and judicious textbook that surveys the historical contexts of the great debates and traces the genealogies of theories and schools of thought. It also considers the problems involved in assessing these theories. The book covers the precursors of anthropology; evolutionism in all its guises; diffusionism and culture area theories, functionalism and structural-functionalism; action-centred theories; processual and Marxist perspectives; the many faces of relativism, structuralism and post-structuralism; and recent interpretive and postmodernist viewpoints.

Good but heavy read. 17 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
I don’t want to put this book down, mainly as a matter of respect to the author. Clearly, he has done a lot of work researching his field and producing each chapter. The result though? This is the difficult bit. The book is very difficult to read and even more difficult to understand. The content is presented in such a way as if it is a revision for someone with previous knowledge in the field and is surely not for beginners. Even the printers could have done a bit more work to make it more user friendly. As a reference book though, it excels.

Format:Paperback
I am a student studying Social Anthropology and this book was excellent to read for a basic understanding of all the main theorists and their contribution to Anthropology as well as a time line for when they contributed their thoughts and studies. I would recommend this to any student studying Anthropology
