Product Description

Product Description

The Karmapa is the spiritual leader of the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism. The present Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje, is the sixteenth of the line which began with Dusum Khyenpa, the first Karmapa, in the twelfth century. Karma Thinley presents the biographies of all of the Karmapas, based on his translations from numerous Tibetan sources. These biographies are not only histories of the training and teaching of these great teachers; they are also inspirational texts used to cultivate devotion in the practitioner. Accompanying the text are sixteen line drawings, based on the thangka paintings of the Karmapas at Rumtek monastery, the seat of the present Karmapa.

5.0 out of 5 stars great text-rotten delivery service, 19 Mar 2009
Superb book but....I ordered this book because Amazon Seurl said they could supply it. I waited. I was eventually informed that I might have to wait because it was temporarily out of stock. I looked and saw that Amazon UK had the book in stcck (no 'temporarliy out of stock' label showed). So, I cancelled my initial order and re-ordered. Then I was given a delivery date some weeks into the future,no reason given . OK, I thought. I can wait. Then my mates said they were interested in getting copies so i ordered some for them. An even lengthier wait was advised. Then, after all that, the 'temporarily out of stock' thing showed up. Bit naff of Amazon to claim that they had the book for somwe time and then AFTER ordering it, they post that. I buy regularly-so far, the worst supplier on Amazon has been.........Amazon (!?!) Doh!

4.0 out of 5 stars The subject matter carries the reader forward, 10 Jun 2001
By Elbert D. Porter "giggle3" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: History of the Sixteen Karmapas of Tibet (Paperback)
The lives of the Karmapas, successive reincarnations of the head of the Karma Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, are here told in an almost textbook-like fashion. This happened, then that happened. There are no dramatic flourishes, no author's interpretations, to pretty it up. Nor is there a need for such narrative artistry. The subject matter is exotic enough, and the lives are fascinating in simple outline. This is essentially a history book intended for readers who are already interested in the Tibetan tradition of tulkus and/or the Karma Kagyu school.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable Source for Amazing Histories, 10 Aug 2005
By Susan Salizbury - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: History of the Sixteen Karmapas of Tibet (Paperback)
Though this book was written years ago, it remains a very reliable source for the histories of the previous 16 Karmapas. How they were discovered, who discovered them, their main disciples, and central contributions to Buddhism and to their lineage are all presented with clarity. Each Karmapa has a special gift: some were great scholars, others consummate artists, and some wrote beautiful practice texts. This book gives ready access to the wonderful and varied histories of the Karmapas, who were the first reincarnate lamas of Tibet.
