Product Description

Synopsis

The 1807-1814 war in the Iberian Peninsula was one of the most significant and influential campaigns of the Napoleonic Wars. Arising from Napoleon's strategic necessity to impose his rule over Portugal andSpain, it evolved into a constant drain on his resources. Sir Charles Oman's seven volume history of the campaign is an unrivalled and essential work. His extensive use and analysis of French, Spanish, Portuguese and British participants' accounts and archival material, together with his own inspection of the battlefields, provides a comprehensive and balanced account of this most important episode in Napoleonic military history. Volume III covers the period from September 1809 to December 1810, when the French were consolidating their hold on Spain, crushing resistance and attempting to drive the British out of Portugal. However, they could not wholly defeat their opponents. The forces of the Spanish Regency Council, with British and Portuguese aid, held out against the siege of Cadiz.

Wellington's Allied army fought a model defensive battle at Bussaco, stalling the French drive into Portugal and enabling the British and Portuguese forces to retire to the shelter of the Torres Vedras fortifications. Here the Allies' defence led to a strategic victory, blunting the French offensive, and ultimately forcing the French to abandon their invasion

These books (volumes one to seven) are VERY detailed. Oman has put in a massive amount of research although this can at times overwhelm the reader and is to be avoided by casual readers. Sir Charles Oman's History is reasonalby un-biased for a Britsh Historian, esp. compared to Napiers work on the same topic.

Full of orders of battle, losses, maps and other vital information to historians and wargamers alike these books are a must for any serious student of the Peninsular War.

After having read with great enthusiasm the last works I have to say that this volume is way too long and some of the detail was now becoming tiresome causing the reader to zone out at times. In addition, this was the first volume that contained errors; spelling, dates, actors etc. Quite surprising from an Oxford educated scholar with an impressive error free first five volumes. In terms of histroical drama, like all previous volumes this one contains it all and is a must have for the entire collection.

This paperback of one Oman "Peninsula War" volume has some defects of typography and map reproduction. If you can, find original hardback copies, with their superb coloured maps and creamy thick paper. Though he has some "Whiggish" bias, like the earlier PW historian Napier, Oman wrote with superb grasp, imagination and detail. The reader has to be patient, has to be ready to see early 19C Portugal and Spain in his mind's eye (though Oman helps him), and has to have an initial interest. Then the text conjures it all up and is fascinating.
5 Stars PLUS for the original, 4 for this only because, as a modern paperback, it doesn't quite have the same feel. I have the original Napier set, but to get the Oman equivalent would be wonderful.
