Although I wouldn't personally regard all of the tracks on this excellent sounding collection as belonging in the "swing" category, there are some lovely recordings that will have that effect on the listener. After an initial slow start with the opening couple of tracks, things pick up with "Jumpin' At The Woodside" by Count Basie and his Orchestra. This recording along with Duke Ellingtons "Take The A-Train" and Billie Holidays "God Bless The Child" were instantly recognisable to me as they appear on an old tv documentary regarding the ex-Heavyweight Champion of the World from the same era, Joe Louis. There follows great recordings from the likes of Count Basie, Glenn Miller, the legendary Fats Waller, and personal favourites of mine such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong. My favourite female vocalist Billie Holiday has another beautiful song on the album with "Solitude", and other vocal inclusions on this largely instrumental disc feature the excellent and lively "Drum Boogie" sung by Irene Daye, Fats Waller on the humorous "Your Feets Too Big" and Marion Hutton, Tex Beneke and The Modernaires with Glenn Miller on "I've Got A Gal In Kalamazoo." A worthy mention goes to Mary Lou Williams who shows why she was regarded as the best female instrumentalist of her time with her recording of "Baby Dear."

Running at around 75 minutes, the recordings on this album are very good in my opinion, certainly as good as I have on many other similar cds produced on other labels that celebrate music from the same era. A general two-page liner is included as are a list of songwriters and recording dates which span the years 1938 to 1942.
