Excellent 24 April 2010

I agree with the above review. History's Mysteries is entertaining, educational and very well-done. And because the presenters are experts too, they really do solve the mysteries, some of which actually have real historical significance. I was expecting them to just travel about Britain, going 'Ooh - this is mysterious!'.
The only thing I would've liked is a longer programme (maybe 45 mins instead of 30 mins), perhaps including more detail of the investigation, and more of the history of the events surrounding it. In one episode, the architectural historian finds what could be an underground WWII bunker, possibly connected to the mystery they are investigating. But then for some reason this isn't explored at all in the programme, which is a bit disappointing.

But overall this is great TV. Makes me want to go out and investigate something historical.

For Time Travellers 14 Mar 2010
By Hobo
Made by the excellent Open University, I first saw some of these programmes some time ago, so when the box set became available I bought it. I am not disappointed, there are 3 discs in the set, one lasts 120 mins and the other two for 90 mins. The "History Mysteries" team comprises of Jonathan Foyle, Architectural historian,Miranda Krestovnikoff, specialist in natural history and Nick Barratt, historian and Archivist. The team are approached by members of the Public who want answers to historical mysteries in their areas. The team endure the rolling sea, explore monuments and ancient houses in the middle of an army firing range, stay overnight to experience the life of a Border reiver, show how an ancient Pele Tower is defended, explore a householders flower patch where a Prisons Gallows stood. The stories and investigations are both interesting and fascinating, with a good selection for the viewer to experience.
If you love history, particularly local history and would like to explore yourself, then this box set will certainly help. I really enjoyed it and would recommend.

History Mysteries Box Set [DVD]
Being an avid fan of time team and other such archaeology type shows I was disappointed with this series. There were no real mysteries involved as the answers had been sussed out years earlier. Instead they try to build it up and then "discover" the answers. A classic one was when they planned to map "for the first time" the churches from a submerged coastal village. The presenter went out on a boat that moved over the location of each church. The water was very turbid so they could not see below them and there were no markers yet the captain knew exactly where to go for each church. How did he do this? He would have already had the GPS location for each church on the GPS navigator. So they already knew where the churches were so why go through the exercise?
There were some interesting little bits of info but it really was a dumbed down show that might interest kids up to 12-14 but not adults.
