They don't make 'em like this anymore,

This review is from: The History Of Mr Polly [DVD] (DVD)
You don't get better 'cinema' than this. Such characters and settings and a feeling for the age it was set in are so difficult to capture but the effect of a great cast that will never be bettered has created a masterpiece of British cinema and a great tribute to the story teller from which it came in H G Wells.Poor Mr Polly. Dreaming of a life of romance, adventure and heroism. Only to be found in the pages of books that he has to hide from his nagging and unadventurous wife. The score enriches the pages of his meanderings with their comedic and nostalgic tempo as Mr Polly struggles to find his place in a fast moving world filled with mishap, fright and hopefulness. There is something here for anyone who feels lost and without direction or fulfilment in romantic entanglements or with the path their life has unwittingly taken. Watch it when you want to be reminded, that there can be a happy ending, even if it arrives from unexpected actions.

'Wells' worth a watch!,

This review is from: The History Of Mr Polly [DVD] (DVD)
I have always loved HG Wells' books. The stories such as 'The Invisible Man' and 'The Time Machine' have always been some of my favourite books. However, this book has always been my favourite Wells novel. The story is wonderful and one of the more down to earth of his repertoir. And i stumbled across the film quite by mistake, looking through a review on Great Expectations.(another of John Mills' hits)I quickly ordered this film and was amazed! It keeps the wonderful story in the right atmosphere and its all topped off by the wonderful acting supplied by the simply sublime cast. It's not one of those films that you watch once and then forget about and leave on the shelf to gather dust. You just want to watch this film over and over again. There are some parts which are shocking (When Mr Polly decides to commit suicide) but then there are wonderous moments.(like when Mr Polly is fighting off Uncle Jim) The spine-tingling monologues that Mr Polly (John Mills) performs throughout the film do pull you into the world and how the character is thinking. With the book already implanted in my mind, i did wonder how they were going to have done some of the significant scenes, but i was wrong to doubt, because its all pulled off superbly. I can't think of a bad word to say against this film. A definate watch for any time of the year, and its family friendly. 10 out of 10 from me! Enjoy the journey into the world of Mr Polly and lose yourself in this truly magnificent film!

This film was the perfect gift for my dad. It was his favourite film as a kid & the story is still good today. John Mills is classic.
