Product Description

Product Description

Iain Hampsher–Monk’s lucid and accessible history of modern political thought is the introduction which many have been waiting for, providing a thorough guide to the ideas and writings of major political thinkers from Hobbes to Marx (including a full account of The Federalist papers).

The author’s aim throughout is to incorporate the benefits of modern scholarship of the historical school, with its emphasis on historical and political circumstances as a key to meaning. Recognizing that for most students time will not allow detailed study of the historical and political contexts of particular works, Hampsher–Monk provides here the background necessary for the reader to situate the writings of key thinkers in relation to wider currents in intellectual and political history.

A History of Modern Political Thought will meet the needs of both general readers and students of political theory and philosophy. It is an indispensable secondary source which aims to situate, explain, and provoke thought about the major works of political theory likely to be encountered by students of modern political thought.

I had the great good fortune to be taught by the author as an undergraduate in Politics at Exeter. A good third of my degree was political philosophy and consequently I had to wade through an enormous pile of texts. This was without any doubt one of the finest secondary sources available. A fine balance of the ideas of the writers themselves and the context those writers found themselves in. Hobbes without understanding the Civil Wars? Hmm...Worth any money an undergrad wishes to fling at it.

A fantastic book, fascinating reading! Was useful for all politics and international relations modules on my university course at a top five university. Comprehensive - covers most of the political thinkers you will ever need to know. In-depth coverage.

Excellent Resource 26 Aug 2009

Format:Paperback
Forget the negative reviews, this is a great resource on modern political thought from Hobbes to Marx. The author correctly takes into account the historical context behind each thinker in a way which illuminates their thought and situates them properly in their particular era. The writing is clear and lucid, sufficiently technical yet still accessible for most. As a secondary resource, of course, is should be read alongside the primary texts themselves, if it is to be made most use of.
