Even today Oliver Cromwell remains a name burned into history. In his time he was a Titan; leaving England a vastly different country from the land into which he was born. This DVD attempts, in only 48 minutes; to take the viewer through the life and times of this political and military giant. It succeeds splendidly, with a clear synopsis covering all the major events of Cromwell's life and times; the detail being fleshed out by commentary from numerous highly respected experts including Tony Benn MP. Should you wish for greater detail, other titles in this series include:- The English Civil War, Edgehill, Naseby, Newark 1643-1646, Marston Moor and Charles I. I consider this DVD exellent value for money, recommending both it and the series from which it comes to anyone who wishes to pick up the essentials of British, and to a large extent world history; without spending to much time or money doing it.History Makers - Oliver Cromwell [DVD]

When compared with TV programmes like Battlefield Britain, this is a fairly pedestrian production of a crucial event in the history of the UK that discusses the religious and political events leading to the ascendancy of parliament and Oliver Cromwell, civil war and the beheading of king Charles 1. Containing coverage of religious reform, the causes of war, the Royalists, Parliamentarians, Prince Rupert, Scotland, Parliaments victory and the King's trial. Narrated by Robert Powell the DVD also contains a few `special features' including a test your knowledge quiz and a picture gallery. Ok to watch once if you are studying for exams but I wouldn't recommend buying it for entertainment.
