I've been spending a happy Saturday reading this comprehensive history of the Mackenzies. It's a very old text that my parents had in hardback and I've wanted my own copy for as long as I can remember. It's great to have stumbled across this Kindle version, though it would probably have very limited appeal to anyone who wasn't either a Mackenzie or an academic researching Highland history.

HASH(0x9dd333d8) out of 5 stars An excellent history thankfully made available through digitisation but disappointingly truncated to 20% of the original. 23 Dec. 2013
By David - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
The original 1894 (second) edition of this book is in our family, it covers my forbears whose family came to Australia in 1870. After two decades of looking for a second-hand original for myself, I was delighted to find this digitised reproduction for sale. What was not made clear when I ordered it was that it was disappointingly truncated to just over 20% of the original 648 pages, ending in mid-sentence around the end of the 15th century, somewhat short of the late 19th century when the original was written. I found no indication of the number of pages which any reputable book dealer supplies [digitised pages are a different length form the original]. I subsequently discovered some sites divulging that rather crucial information; why not mine? Is there a whiff of fraudulence here?

The content of the original is possibly the best account of its kind, it spans about 800 y with speculative looks back to the time of William The Conqueror. Written in an interesting 19th century style with numerous quotes in the dialects of the respective times, including Gaelic. It was written recently enough to facilitate linking into modern families when genealogies are commonplace and accessible. It is recommended for anyone interested in the history of the Mackenzies however you spell it.

Sadly, there is no index, a valuable tool missing in the original, but this was in the 19th century, the technology exists to do it relatively painlessly now. The binding of the reproduction is strong and handles nicely, 5 stars; the overall experience disappointing, one star. I am awaiting the offer of a full length version or a refund.

HASH(0x9c36ebe8) out of 5 stars Historical Rendering 12 Aug. 2013

This is a history of the Mackenzies family originates in the Highlands around the year 1064. Presented in a story telling format, the revised edition would benefit from a table of contents and index

As a member of the Clan Mackenzie, actually a sept, that being McKenzie, I found this as an invaluable tool in researching my ancestors and the Mackenzie line.....a welcomed and resourceful addition to my genealogy library.

It wasn't quite what I thought it might be, but anyone with the name MacKenzie may well love it. Cheers!

A good resource book. A lot of information that can be a bit difficult to keep up with.
