Product Description

Book Description
Uncluttered by commonplace knowledge and well-worn facts this remarkable work offers a genuinely new account of some of the major events of the past. It explains, for instance, why Stonehenge was never completed and the roof not put on; what terrified the Romans so much about Haggis; why there are no references to real ale, cricket or Lady Godiva in the Doomsday Book; who actually wrote the work of the six Shakespeare brothers; and what Sir Christopher Wren's motives were for starting the Great Fire of London. Collectors of Graham Clarke's work will marvel at his endless inventions: students of history will never trust a fact again. The 18 essays, originally printed to accompany his History of England etchings, are here given in a greatly expanded and revised form, offering the perfect verbal complement to the visual humour of his prints.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Book!, 3 Dec 2000
By A Customer
Forget all ideas of being educated, this is a humourous, entertaining book! Going from the Druids to the Victorians this book takes you through its unique perspective of history, complete with endless puns (the Celtic Wode Works being one of them) and hilarious illustrations. This is like an adults' version of Terry Dearys' 'The Horrible Hstories'. Would be an excellent Christmas present for anyone with a sense of the ridiculous.

It is not what I was looking for but that was my fault for not choosing more wisely. As a 'fun' book it is amusing.
