5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and incredibly interesting 28 Oct 2008
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is just what you need if you have an interest in the . . interesting bits . . of history. It's FULL of really beautiful imagery and makes you wonder how they crammed so much written information in with all of the pictures.

The book is designed in spreads - so each double page spread is a specific period in history. In other words, you can dip in and out of this book as you like and there is no need to read it from front to back. It starts with 6 million year old skulls - just to let you know how much history is involved here.

The book is pretty weighty - and about the length/width of a laptop. The front cover is horrible compared to what's inside. I'm not a heavy reader myself but find this book very easy to read - and enjoyable!

By Another Weasley VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover
I didn't study history at school, I was more into science yet I have always been fascinated by the subject and I do think it is important to have some knowledge of history. I wanted a book that I would be able to flick through and learn about major events from all over the world. I noticed this book and decided to get it as it seemed to cover everything I wanted.

The book is fantastic!! Filled with useful facts and trivia it details history from the dawn of civilization to the present day - in other words, it does exactly what it says on the tin!

It is split into 7 main sections, and each section covers the main events of that time period as well as the major historical characters involved. Each section is filled with photographs, maps, diagrams and timelines all of which allow a detailed view of the point being explained. The seven sections are : -

1. Origins (4.5 MYA - 3000 BCE)
2. Rulers and Hierarchies (3000 - 700 BCE)
3. Thinkers and Believers (700 BCE - 600 CE)
4. Warriers, Travellers, & Inventors (600 - 1450)
5. Renaissance & Reformaiton (1450 - 1750)
6. Industry & Revolution (1750 - 1914)
7. Population & Power (1914 - present)

The last 100 or so pages of the book focus on National Histories, which looks at the individual histories of the world's 193 countries. It is more of a bullet point format of important years in a country's history. I find this section fascinating as it covers countries that would otherwise be overlooked when comparing them in the world's history. Often there is not much on the history of the smaller countries and it is only a few details on the last century but it is still interesting to see some of the major events countries have had to deal with.

4.0 out of 5 stars History 3 Jan 2009
By Spider Monkey HALL OF FAME TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
In 'History' you have a beautifully presented overview of world history in a large coffee table book format. The photography and illustrations are superb and this manages to cover a wide range of periods and locations from around the world within its pages. There are plenty of timelines to introduce each section, as well as a detailed country by country breakdown of key events at the back. This also has double page spreads to focus on key figures and events from history, like Martin Luther King and 911 to name but two as example. As you would expect in a book and theme of this scope, the various topics are very brief and this only serves as an introduction to any given topic for you to then pursue in greater depth if you so wish. This is very much one to dip in and out of and makes for fascinating reading in an attractive and well laid out format. A worthy addition to any reference bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars From an actual reader 23 Nov 2007

History: The Definitive Visual Guide
I had the luck to buy from an "bricks and mortar" seller and can say, in my opinion, the book is as good as the reviews above suggest it.

It covers a wide range of civilisations (including Asian, African, South American and lesser-known Indian ones) in a concise and clear manner. It covers the salient points in a clear and engaging manner, makes you want to know more and places each civilisation in geographical, topological and cultural context.

Although offering an overview of every civilisation, it is more a taster book than a detailed study of any civilisation. Great starting point for an overview of civilisation and their roles in history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely THE Definitive Guide to History... 12 April 2012
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
When I first saw the DK logo on the book cover, my heart sank...We are all familiar with the logo on the most basic books on history per subject. However, when I opened the cover and took my first glimpse through- I was thrilled. All of history opens before your eyes, in a nice time line format.Everything from warfare, medicine, famous Kings, Queens, writing, inventions, religions...the list goes on. The photography is brilliant! Being an Art Historian I appreciate the value of a well presented work- this is it.
If you need to own just one book on history from the dawn of mankind to the present, get this..You will not be disappointed. This is great for everyone from young students, right up to scholars who may need a brush up on a particular area of history they are not as familiar with.
