First published in 1890, this book has gone through many further printings over the past 121 years. This one has been reprinted to cope with the demand for those interested in the Wool town of Coggeshall in mid-Essex.
I think it is worth noting the chapter headings:
Introduction,
Ecclesiastical history,
The Abbey,
Manorial,
Nonconformist chapels,
The charities,
Manufactures,
Notable families and men,
Ancient houses, trade signs, field names etc,
Fares, customs, folklore and miscellaneous.
Index.
It therefore covers the full history of Coggeshall from early times through to the 19th century. It is packed full of information on the town including little-known facts and interesting people who have been associated with it. There are some great little illustrations in the book including the exterior and interior of St Nicholas Chapel, Coggeshall Hall, Paycockes ancient gateway, the ambulatory of the Abbey and one of the tower of great Coggeshall church (before it was bombed during the Second World War).
If you're interested in Coggeshall in particular, mid-Essex towns or towns that have been associated with the wool trade then this is an excellent book to find out about one of them. Recommended.
