I respect the author quite a bit, who is now deceased. I bought this book expecting that it would cover the time period it says. However, the book proper ends in the 16th century. There is a 3-1/5 page epilog that briefly covers from the 16th century to the present. This is what I wanted the book to cover the most, and it skimps on it. The author said that it would be in his next book. Of course, he died without completing it.
The book has no index, which means that you can't easily look up something. This is a major flaw in a book. I don't like the organization of the book - most chapters are about specific countries. I'd rather have a more chronological presentation.
On the positive side, it has quite a few good photographs - mostly in color. The photos are a lot better than the ones in any similar book that I have.
