This title explores the whole period of the British Lions' existence. It examines the origins, development and future of the Lions tours and investigates the social and political issues which have played a part in the evolution of one of the world's most formidable touring forces. It describes the post-war tours and profiles of many of the great players and strong men of the time, who tell of their feeling of fulfilment, and of the pride and the passion every British or Irish player feels on being selected as a British Lion. This celebratory volume provides access into the workings and preparations behind every Lions tour since 1920. It is a definitive account of the game's most prestigious and world-renowned representatives, and includes details of the victorious 1997 tour to South Africa.

Strictly for the rugby history buffs and statisticians. However, this does not detract it from being a very readable and informative book, especially with Willie John McBride introducing the book.

Starting with the very first 'tour' in 1888, to Australia and New Zealand and, fittingly, includes the 2001 tour to Australia.

Fascinating accounts of the travelling conditions of the first handful of tours, the varied background of the amateur players who have worn the red shirt, and the development of the skills of the Southern hemisphere teams and their lengthy dominance over the Lions.

With the author have been a Lion himself, the book is well and detailedly researched, with the Lions and the Southern hemisphere teams written in even terms.

Unfortunately the author passed away before the first edition of the book was published, with the orginal edition ending with the 1993 tour to New Zealand and thus the end of the amateur days. However, his son takes the reins of the book for the lastest edition by including the last two tours which were in the professional era.

The last two sections encompassing the professional era, appeared to have been hurriedly written (obviously to include comments on the 2001 tour to Australia.) The updates in the latest edition of the book would have undoubtedly benefited from the original author's input and meticulous research.

For those who over indulge in sports quizes, there is detailed appendices with a breakdown of all the points ever scored in Lion's history, all players and details of various records....

A veritable who's who, and who did what, in Lions' history, while it may not be riddled with controvesy and overendowed with racousness like the latest books concerning the Lions, or individual Lions, nevertheless the book is still a very enjoyable and entertaining read. Read more ›
