Book Description

17 Nov 2000

This pioneering volume traces the history of the region which became Indonesia, from early times to the present day, in over three hundred specially drawn full-colour maps with detailed accompanying text. In doing so, the Atlas brings fresh life to the fascinating and tangled history of this immense archipelago.

Beginning with the geographical and ecological forces which have shaped the physical form of the archipelago, the Historical Atlas of Indonesia goes on to chart early human migration and the changing distribution of ethnic groups. It traces the kaleidoscopic pattern of states in early Indonesia and their gradual incorporation into the Netherlands Indies and eventually into the Republic of Indonesia.

Product Description

Review

'This extensive work is broad in scope. It contains much material not previously presented in cartographic form. The Historical Atlas of Indonesia is a monumental work, representing a great deal of literary research and cartographic effort, for which the author deserves high praise.' Moussons 4 (Social Science Research of Southeast Asia)

This is a superb book and its scope is much wider than the title suggests. The text and numerous excellent maps deal with Indonesian landscape and environment, ethnicity, religions and population, the evolution of the states and colonies in the Archipelago over the last 2000 years, and the development of present-day Indonesia. The chapter on war, revolution and political transformation from 1942 to 2000 provides an immense amount of detail that is highly relevant to current political events. The Atlas ends with a map that summarizes political unrest and violence in 2000. Congratulations to Robert Cribb and University of Hawai'i Press. The book deserves an award - and I hope that it gets one.

This is a superb book. Its scope is much wider than the title suggests. Over 250 pages of text and excellent maps cover the Indonesian landscape and environment, ethnicity, religions and population, and the emergence of states, colonies and then the Indonesian republic. The chapter on war, revolution and political transformation provides detailed background to current events. It is very up-to-date: the last map deals with violence and unrest in 2000. Congratulations to Robert Cribb and University of Hawaii Press. The book deserves an award - I hope it gets one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Expensive but worth it 9 Jan 2008

I borrowed a copy of this via interlibrary loan while working on my own new book COOL MAPS OF INDONESIA (Nimble Books LLC 2007). The HISTORICAL ATLAS OF INDONESIA is a very useful scholarly compendium of hundreds if not thousands of maps developed using a very extensive GIS. Features I particularly liked were a list of islands over x size and a map that showed name changes next to islands. Most of the maps are based on modern era data. This would be an excellent reference for any library. Indeed, I might say it's a must purchase, given that Indonesia has the 4th largest population of any country in the world.
