Product Description

Synopsis

This is a guide to the authentic London pub. From river pubs to theatre pubs, Victorian gin palaces to medieval coaching houses, the pubs in the book have been chosen for their architecture and interiors, for having a role in local social history or having once been frequented by the famous, infamous, and in some cases, ghostly. The book includes details on hundreds of historical pubs in each area. There are practical tips and information on all the pubs featured, such as travel, opening hours, food and beer selections. There are maps of all the main areas and listings of the other attractions nearby every pub.

From the Back Cover

No trip to London would be complete without a visit to a real pub. Pubs are unique pieces of living history, secreted in forgotten streets and alleyways far from the main thoroughfares, that have stood timeless as the city around them has moved through the centuries. Pubs have survived, not preserved in amber, but because of their very nature as working establishments that continue to provide a community with the same time-honored services of refreshment and hospitality.

Pubs represent a history of London life that stretches across the centuries from the taverns that served Chaucer and Shakespeare to those frequented by Orwell and Dickens. Here for the first time, London's finest hundred pubs have been beautifully photographed inside and out and brought to life with their special fascinating histories. River pubs and theatre pubs, Victorian gin palaces and medieval coaching houses have been chosen for their well-preserved architecture and authentic interiors and their lively place in local history. These 100 pubs have been the drinking haunts of the famous and infamous, from pirates and press gangs to highwaymen and East End gangsters and from literary clubs and members of parliament to kings and their lovers.

This book is also a practical guide to these historic pubs, offering all of the essential information opening hours, how to get there, what kind of beers are offered, and whether or not food is served.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for planning your trip, 27 April 2000

This review is from: Historic Pubs of London (Paperback)
While there might be more comprehensive guides, the attractive photographs in this guide makes this ideal for those of us who visit London from time to time. This book focuses on the pubs themselves, and less on the beer served. Have your A-Z ready to find the excact location of each pub!

It's somewhat ironic that a book entitled "Historic Pubs of London" features a picture of The Albion in Barnsbury on the cover. A few years ago this pub had everything ripped out and replaced. It's bland generic interior represents the loss of tradition and another failed attempt at modernity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hops & history, 14 Jan 2002
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Historic Pubs of London (Hardcover)
This is a fun book for reading as well as a handy guide for planning a London pub crawl or two. The book breaks down London by area, with one or two pages on each pub of interest. Although it's not a comprehensive guide by any means, it does highlight some of the most interesting pubs in London. I visited The Anchor & Bunch of Grapes after reading this book and both were wonderful examples of different periods of pub life in London.
