So it appears we've come full circle with the legendary recording "Judy At Carnegie Hall", just released by JSP Records. So much has been written, both about the concert itself and the phenomenal live recording and it's immense impact on our popular culture. Garland was at one of her peak vocal periods when she stepped on that hallowed stage, and thankfully Capitol was at hand to preserve it all. Released first on vinyl, it's initial releases on compact disc botched horribly by Capitol until DCC (then Capitol for the concerts 2001 40th anniversary) released the complete, start-to-finish-every scrap of applause, every note Garland sang and every brilliant annecdote told to her adoring audience that 23rd of April 1961. So why do we need another version of this performance released? Reason being is that the original, mono vinyl version, the musical document that spent 95 weeks on Billboard's Top 200 chart, 13 of those weeks at #1, winning 5 Grammys including Best Album & Female Vocal, has never seen the light of day on compact disc......and that's what we have here with this newest release of the Carnegie performance. I am grateful beyond words that we have BOTH the HISTORICAL document, and this...the MUSICAL document of that evening. While I will always cherish the complete versions, I've always missed not having the album I grew up with.....the album concentrating on Garland's music and vocal artistry, strong and undiluted, without extended applause and chatter. If I have one bit of a complaint, it's that JSP has not used the stereo version, but the original mono that was first released. Being mono, one will notice that the sound lacks the dynamic range and nuances of the Capitol 2001 version, being quite "punchy" and "boxy".Read more ›

Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
There is little that this reviewer could possibly add to the many voices that have been raised in adulation of both the artist or performance contained in this double CD release by the ever reverential JSP records.
What I am happy to discuss is the specifics of the discs.
I was wary once I was aware that this was a remastered MONO recording. As a member of the STEREO generation, and as a listener that has been disappointed by many a MONO release I was unsure of purchasing this, no matter the promises by advance press.
Coming to the Garland cult late and having little reference to this mythical concert, it was not until ordering the complete 2001 Capitol CD release (which is inclusive of both banter between star and audience and expanded audience adulation) that I heard the Carnegie Hall concert in its entirety. I was later fascinated to learn that this wasn't how the original concert was delivered to the record buying public of 1961. What they had the opportunity to hear on record was the performer and performance in its purest form with all superfluous activity edited out and little to distract from Garland at the height of her powers.
This JSP release was a complete revelation to this listener. Having first found the grown Judy through a Capitol compilation record my parents owned and being electrified by what was found there, this double CD gave me those same chills of (re) discovery. For a concert that I believed I knew back to front, it is this nod to that original double LP release of 1961 that reignited my passion for that one night in April 44 years ago, helping me to hear that performance with new ears.
I am more than glad to own both versions and the completist in me is even happier to have each to compare and contrast, however for pure listening pleasure this JSP production suprecedes that latter Capitol release.
Simply, there is something magic contained here within this pared back production that is unquantifiable. Brava!
