This is a fantastic little book which (in its convenient small format) will be a great supplement to a modern Berlin guidebook. It contains numerous beautiful pictures of Berlin buildings from around 1900, with detailed descriptions of their Construction, use and history, as well as their fate during and after WW II. The only thing missing is pictures of the sites as they look today - before and after pictures - but that is not what this book promises.

Historic Berlin 1 Aug. 2009
By Daddio - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
I wanted to see what the city of Berlin, Germany looked like during the years spanning the formation of the German Empire (1871) and World War II. This book does the job. The author provides excellent b/w photographs of many of the legendary Berlin buildings/parks/plazas/monuments from this time frame. His descriptions of each historic Berlin site are concise and well written. The author also included comments about the amount of destruction most of the historic sites received during World War II and comments on whether or not these sites have been rebuilt or demolished since then. The only negative which I find is the book does not include a map of Berlin so the reader can immediately identify the location(s) of the historic site(s). All in all the book is well worth reading.

Good Things Come in Small Packages 5 April 2015
By Tom F - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
At first I was disappointed with the diminutive size of the book - I missed the size info in the product details. But the truism of good things come in small packages holds true for this nifty glimpse back to the age of the Hohenzollerns, Bismark and Wagner. The array of old photos (and some heavy retouches) presents Berlin as it was - imperial, gothic, militaristic, monolithic, prideful and in its way beautiful. This book offers a rare look at a major city just before total war brings destruction to many of the landmarks illustrated. This is an excellent effort.
