If you love the Studio Ghibli films already (in particular Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind [DVD], Princess Mononoke (Special Edition) [DVD], Porco Rosso [DVD] and Spirited Away [DVD]), there really isn't much of an excuse for not getting this. Joe Hisaishi did a brilliant job of composing original soundtracks for these films and this is a brilliant collection of their highlights.

If you are yet to have entered the magic world of Studio Ghibli, then what you can expect from this soundtrack is a fascinating mixture of Asian themed music meeting Western orchestration. Joe Hisaishi is truly a master of his art and it is by no coincidence that he has composed the soundtracks to almost all the Studio Ghibli films.

The collection is brilliant, taking some of the best pieces from the aforementioned films and would be an excellent introduction to Joe Hisaishi's music or a reminder of how great his soundtracks really are.

I had a CD of Joe Hisaishi's songs I hated almost every day. One day I imagined how beautiful could that be if played right without those japanese-child-like voices. Here it is played right at its best: Nausicaa's suite is what John Barry has been trying to do all his life (and did sometimes); Mononoke's suite is a transporting drama; and Chihiro's suite is a picture of the chilhood place we will not tread anymore.

Good Collection, but little that's new for old fans 2 Dec 2008
By Jamie - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
If you allready own the Princess Mononoke Symphonic Suite and the Spirited Away soundtrack, you have two thirds of the music on this album allready. If you don't allready own them, it will be worth the extra money to buy the whole albums seperately instead. To the credit of the publisher though, they picked the tracks that I would have picked myself for "best of" selections from those two albums - I suppose if you're trying to introduce someone brand new to Hisaishi's music this isn't a bad place to start. The Spirited Away tracks sound in a few places as if they're a different recording from the soundtrack album, but not different enough to be truly unique in the way the Mononoke symphonic suite is to the Mononoke original soundtrack.

Thanks to the wonder of the digital age, however, you can and should buy and download the Nausicca tracks and the Porco Roso one if you wish: the soundtracks were never released in the USA and you can't easily get these anywhere else.

Overall: a Three-star track list, plus a bonus star just for being Joe Hisaishi music.
