On her new album for Honest Jon's, it's also the voice of a gospel singer returning to the music that first made her name: the country soul songs presented by the same label on its 2004 compilation Candi Staton, twenty-six tracks of Muscle Shoals magic. With His Hands, Candi Staton breaks your heart without resorting to songs about adultery. Mark Nevers for one will never forget the experience. I agree with every one else on this page. This is a truly great album, retro yes but who cares. Once a soul fan, you are one for life. I thought the chances of anyone making an album like this again for the love of it was zero. Praise must be heaped upon Honest Jon's for their resurrecting the wonderful Candi Staton's career. Of course sometime over the next twenty years a whole new generation will 'discover' this kind of music on the back of a huge marketing campaign of some new starlet regurgitating stuff done 30 years ago. However, you dont need to wait for that. This is the real deal. Buy it.

It's been over 20 years since Candi Staton's last album of secular music having recorded solely gospel in the intervening years.
So with this in mind it comes as quite a surprise just how good this album is. Her voice has grown stronger and many of the songs deal with past abusive relationships which gives the listener a feeling of eavesdropping on her innermost thoughts. Candi wrote four of the eleven tracks with various others providing the rest. Not many original '60's soul artists are still recording music of this quality. Standout tracks are "You Don't Have This Far To Go", "It's Not Easy Letting Go", "When Will I?" and the awesome "His Hands".
This is a gem of an album which I will always treasure and I hope you will too.

A great smouldering southern soul album. I hope this is the first of many more as the voice is still in great form - I was just waiting for Candi to break out and really go for it but perhaps that's wishful thinking. Nevertheless a wonderful nightime kind of album.
