'His Hands' is yet another album of gospel soul classics from one of the greatest female vocalists of modern times, theinimitable Candi Staton. 5.0 out of 5 stars Soul music, old school style - brilliant, 17 April 2006
By Stephen Murphy "madmonkey999" (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews

An absolute belter of an album. Candi Staton may be known these days for the odd 70s classic (Young Hearts Run Free) and vocals on remixed club tracks (You Got The Love), but this album sees her tapping into the style of music that Joss Stone has made popular again, and which Van Morrison has been keeping the flame burning.
And where you sometimes get the feeling that Joss Stone is good, but somehow hasn't lived enough to sing the songs, this record certainly makes you feel that Candi has been there, done that.
As well as the excellent vocals, the whole vibe of the record is 'real' - from live drums (not a drum machine in sight it seems) to a proper horn section to piano and guitars. All this gives the record a true 'warm' feeling.
The songs range from good to excellent - highlights include the opening track (You Don't Have Far to Go - a magical piece of music) and I'll Sing A Love Song To You. Neither would sound out of place on an old Stax LP.
Still not sure about the cover of "Cry to Me" - done this time in a Sam & Dave soul stomper style, it's good, but I'm a big fan of the old Solomon Burke one. But I'm just nit-picking here, trying to find a fault.

So there you go - just a brilliant record. If you like Ms Stone, then you'll love this.

5.0 out of 5 stars candi just gets better., 11 April 2006
By mrs rosemary clark (for billy ,england) - See all my reviews
if it is remotely possible candi staton just gets better. this is a spin off last years re-release from candi's early years on the 'fame 'label. country soul that i think is what candi was put on this earth to sing. first track is a cover of merle haggard's 'you don't have far to go' one listen is enough to go and spend your hard earned cash on this cd.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional, 23 Jun 2006

I agree with every one else on this page. This is a truly great album, retro yes but who cares. Once a soul fan, you are one for life. I thought the chances of anyone making an album like this again for the love of it was zero. Praise must be heaped upon Honest Jon's for their resurrecting the wonderful Candi Staton's career. Of course sometime over the next twenty years a whole new generation will 'discover' this kind of music on the back of a huge marketing campaign of some new starlet regurgitating stuff done 30 years ago. However, you dont need to wait for that. This is the real deal. Buy it.
