NEW from Jonathan Sturak, the Amazon Best-Selling Author of Clouded Rainbow

Engaged couple Jason and Hazel travel across the world to meet her family in this true story of love and adventure. Temptation looms as the best friend of Hazel tests their relationship and touches their souls.

A deeply personal account of the conflict of culture between American excess and Philippine poverty, His First, Her Last explores the ability of love to transcend two worlds apart. But after an accident spills blood on the streets of a remote village, the lives of this couple flash before their eyes.

Will he escape? Will she survive? Will his first trip be her last?

Take a journey across the world to an exotic land where you will find love, life, and what it means to be alive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible 15 Dec 2013

Spent the whole time waiting for the story to start. Basically an untraveled American goes abroad, doesn't like it, and goes home. Nothing like the blurb or front cover suggests.

2.0 out of 5 stars Uneventful 3 Dec 2013

I didn't like the style of writing at all, it was like it was written by a teenage boy - the writer comes across as a bit stupid and naive. The story leading up to the main event is slow and uneventful and when the 'action' does eventually happen the book suddenly ends. I skipped lots of the pages as it just didn't grip me at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pertinent to the times 2 Dec 2013

This is not a book I would choose naturally, It was enlightening since a friend used to have a Phillipino girlfriend and I never could get insight into how she thought until now. The book is well written and has a few twists and is not just a bland Dream Marriage dating sight disaster novel.

It didn't seize me so I had to keep reading but it was interesting,if I was paying for it personally I would not pay more than £3

I was reading it against the background of the hurricane disaster for the country

5.0 out of 5 stars A book that I will always remember! 10 Oct 2013
By Hazel Reambillo - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed reading Jonathan Sturak's His First, Her Last so much that I was able to finish it in one sitting - could not put the book down. I am a Filipina and I am from the same province where the accident happened. I was reading the book and I knew exactly what each place mentioned look like! Although the hospital's name wasn't mentioned, I immediately knew which hospital it was, too! Aside from that, Jonathan was able to present both sides of the country - what makes it ugly and what makes it beautiful. The book was able to capture the vibe of each place the characters went to. Its pages also evoked emotions where least expected.
Congratulations to the Author for seeing the beauty of the Philippines through the people despite the corruption, the lack of basic healthcare in government-run hospitals (such as the one Jason was brought to) and sanitation, the shortage in amenities and the horrific traffic from Pasay to Balintawak (Edsa). If you want to receive the best healthcare, you have to go to a private hospital and you better be prepared with the cost. It's just how it is.
My country is beautiful, indeed, but its beauty is tainted by these that our people have toughened up enough to make do with what we have and to be resilient. I slept on the floor as a child, but we had beds. It was fun especially when you sleep alongside your cousins, siblings, aunts and uncles. There will be storytelling about ghosts and scary creatures until all the kids would fall asleep under their shared blankets. I believe it is part of the culture as well.
His First, Her Last is one of those books that I will always remember.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Story 3 Oct 2013
By Gungirl007 - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I'm a huge fan of Jonathan Sturaks work. This story was very different from what I've read of his. Based on actual events in the author's life he tells of an amazing journey to the Philippines to meet and visit his fiancee Hazel's family.
From the moment Jason and Hazel arrived in her country, Jason finds himself questioning things he takes for granted. He is suddenly surrounded by the harsh realities of what life is like living in the Philippines, the poverty, the people and the lifestyles are much harsher.
Jason's character reminded me very much of Jack Nicholson in the movie as good as it gets. The fears/phobias we all experience outside of our comfort zones. Fear of drinking water, eating food and the unknown.
As Jason begins his journey of meeting Hazel's family and experiencing the old ways vs new he discovers the importance of his own family and what he's taken for granted. He also begins to care for and love Hazel even more as well as her family.
When tragedy strikes Jason and Hazel's love and relationship are put to the test as family members from the Philippines and the States pull together.
I was amazed at how well the author brought together both cultures and was able to give the reader a real feel of what it's like to leave everything you know for the unknown.
The story grabs you from the beginning to the end. I think this is one of Jonathan Sturak's best stories.
I can't thank him enough for providing me with an ARC to read. Great read and kudos to him for telling his own story in his own words.

1.0 out of 5 stars quick read and somewhat interesting if you cut through his rambling dreamlike states. 7 Nov 2013
By Kris - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This was a quick read as I quickly skimmed through the torturously long dreams and fantasies he had with Joy. Boy, his GF must have really loved reading those parts! I was interested in reading this as I lived in the Philippines a number of years ago. The author's story was sad and I am a bit appalled at his lack of understanding a culture that is his fiancée's life. He seems a tad insensitive and rather selfish. He also needs to cut the apron strings with mama if he hopes to have a full and enriching life with his future wife or any woman for that matter. The title is misleading, he wasn't lost in the Philippines, he is just lost.

I wouldn't recommend this book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why the world does not like Americans 5 Jan 2014

Thank you for writing a book that is a complete guide to how to be an ass in a foreign country. As someone who has been living in different southeast Asia countries for the last few years I am ashamed to be from the same home country as you. I read parts of your book aloud to some of my Filipino friends with great embarrassment of how you portray their country. I kept reading, finishing the entire book-just hoping you would have a revelation about what a dick you were being, but it never came. Put away your hand sanitizer, get over eating only what you know, stop being obsessed with your man purse and try really experiencing a different country.

4.0 out of 5 stars His First, Her Last 22 Sep 2013
By T. Tracy - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I have taken some time and stepped away from the book I read and finished. The Author had sent me a copy of his book- His First, Her Last by Jonathan Sturak. I felt like the book was really long and painful to read because I was waiting for something to happen. Other books I have read by this author contained more of a mystery and I guess I was always waiting for the story to begin. It turned out this was more of an autobiographical story about the author visiting the Philippines with his fiancé. It was written well just difficult to get into the book because I had different expectations. And the only review I found online after I finished really loved the book so much I felt bad I didn't enjoy it nearly as much.
