5.0 out of 5 stars His Dream of The Skyland 27 Nov 2011
By Hugo - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
His Dream of The Skyland is a fantastic and unique piece of graphic novel fiction. The story, which takes place in Hong Kong at the height of Britain's control of SouthEast Asia, and the Imperialist era, is so prismatic. It encompasses three levels of storytelling: One which is about three boys' attempt to discover the meaning and magic of their youth, via acrobatics and magic tricks, illusion and sometimes, rascally, penny theft. The boys' story weaves through a larger, dynamic tale of the Walled City of Kowloon, which, in this book, is an utter no mans land. The British government has labelled it an illegal ghetto, and the Chinese, consumed by their internal political turmoil, have lost touch with its own people. The boys discovery of this strange, chaotic place, which begins to make a world of its own, bonds them together and inspires them to make something more of their lives. Above that is the larger forces at work, the powers of imperialism and its effect on the lives of those in its purvue.

The artwork is gorgeous, and the story pulls you in almost instantaneously and is deeply moving. I held my breath all the way through, and will go back in and re-read it again, to make sure nothing precious was missed in offing.
5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Beautiful Book 23 Mar 2012

This book was recommended to me by a friend and it did not dissapoint. Being new to the graphic novel space, I was blown away by the beauty of the art work. It's completely beyond what I would have imagined.

The quality of the book itself is also top notch and is proudly displayed in my living room. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
5.0 out of 5 stars It quickly moved to the top of my reading stack 11 Mar 2012
By Steven Lynn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I was intrigued by the subject matter of this book, Hong Kong, 1920-ish. I usually have a stack of books I'm reading at the same time, and this one quickly moved to the top of my stack. That's praise, for some of the other things in my stack were "required" reading, while this wasn't.

It paints a magical picture of the time and place. What moves it are the characters, and 'what-will-happen-to-them' sense. But, remember the title, "His Dream of..." It isn't a thriller, or action story. A dreamlike quality is ever present. And in the background is the gritty reality of a populace striving to survive; prostitution, death in childbirth, petty and crime-boss crime. Add in some interesting characters, who at least don't succumb to the negative aspects of the environment and some who make their own happiness. Recommended.
