Don't be fooled by the movie adaptation of the first book, which is much over simplified. The trilogy will appeal to both genders and all ages. On one level it's a children's adventure in the tradition of Ransome's 'Swallows and Amazons' with the child protagonists learning to be brave, resourceful and self reliant. On another, the concepts of innocence and experience emphasise a deeper meaning around the central theme of the acquisition of knowledge being heresy to the established Church. Lyra reads the alethiometer (Golden Compass) with childish innocence, whereas adult scholars need interpretive books. The story falls within the science fiction and fantasy genre, with Asriel forcing his way into the Aurora and world crossing escapades, involving shape shifting daemons. Pullman has said he sees the work as stark realism because the characters are real people and not aliens or hobbits. Well worth reading, whether you liked the movie or not.

Amazing 6 Jan 2012
By Jack
Format:Paperback
Very good books, I cannot stop reading them the first book was a lovely read, and I would say is the "least dark" out of the 3, the second book follows the stories of different characters and how they come together, and the third book I've just started and can't wait to find out what's going to happen.

A must have 19 Mar 2012
By Andreas
Format:Paperback
This trilogy is just astounding. You get drawn in to a world that differs not too much from our own to feel a connection, but still it has elements that makes it unique. In the story you follow the journey of a girl named Lyra and her pet companion on a quest to save the magical world she lives in. Every book is awesome from beginning to end and its really sad that they didnt make all three books into movies (Just the first one).

If you like fantasy books then this is something you just have to have in your collection, buy right away but be wary, you might not be able to put the books away before you have finished them.
