5.0 out of 5 stars New to this author, 14 Oct 2008
This is the first book I have read of Anne Gracie and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The story is about one of four soldiers returning home after the war. The heroine is a lady who has lost all her family and her father has left her with no home. They meet on the road when as strangers he offer her some kindness at her lowest ebb and he then turns out to be the new owner of her family home.

I enjoyed this book so much, I have now ordered another Anne Gracie novel and can't wait for it to arrive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Its OK but not great. , 5 Nov 2008

Better than the last but not as good as her first books. This book left me lukewarm. There are too many convenient coincidences in the plot which were just a bit too easy and obvious - especially the ending. He was too nice and she was too tortured and I found her character irritating. I kept wondering why he was bothering. IMO this book is OK but I know Gracie can be better so I was disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars More than 4*,just a bit less than 5*, 17 April 2009
By Marielle Altimeter "Mermaid" (Horsham, W.Sussex, U.K.) - See all my reviews
I've just finished reading this book,it's great. This was much better than the first in the series and I hope it will get better.
Maybe the reasons why I like this book is because even though Harry ,the hero, doesn't realises what he is feeling for 'Nell' is love in the beginning, he knows he wants to care for her and felt murderous when she was subjected to cruelties. I like Ms Gracie making us know about Harry feelings so often in the book.
And of course when the full story of why Nell was on that road on that wet and rainy day is known it was very touching.Maybe I am a bit bloodthirsty but the ending of the villain was just too quick I wish Harry had really gelded that 'cur'.
One of the best part of the story for me was when Nell finally told Harry what has happened to her,(and of course Harry being the hero not only thoroughly understand and accept but also give thanks for having found Nell) thanks goodness it was quite early on in the book, I am not one to enjoy reading a story when what happenend to the heroine that make her how she is only come out at the end of the book.
The little second romance going on in the book between Tibby and Ethan was very sweet.
Brillant book all round, definitely recommend this book to all who loves spunky heroin and strong but silent hero.
