An utterly convincing and fascinating read, not least for having possibly the most enigmatic and infuriatingly difficult central character I've ever come across. Flawed hero doesn't begin to describe the contradictions that are the historical figure Max Hirschfeld, a Jew who retained his top government post in Nazi occupied Holland with the full knowledge of the occupiers. This is above all a tense thriller but it is also an important insight into a little known or considered society and part of the war. There is a mass of absorbing socio historical detail in this meticulously researched book. Who before this knew anything of Holland's Jews or the reaction to their plight of the rest of the population beyond the story of Ann Frank scribbling away in her attic? This book adds a whole new dimension to the little told story of Holland's Jews and their fate. Highly recommended.
