Product Description

Product Description

`Hippy Jonny and the Banality of Life' is about Jonny, a free spirit who doesn't get put down easily. He's not happy with the status quo of rat race life, and ends up getting fired in the very first page of the book.

Over the course of the story, we learn that despite his long, dishevelled hair and stoner lifestyle Jonny is capable of a great deal. With the help of his long-time friends Ezekiel and Ray, Jonny copes with the harshness of being unemployed and signing on Job Seekers.

In many respects, Ezekiel and Ray represent the limited choices available to Jonny. Either he can live on the fringes of society like Ezekiel, a street smart dealer in counter-culture goods. Or follow Ray's more mainstream example of working part-time in a Call Centre, and relying on his vivid imagination to get him through the day.

But Jonny isn't `seeking' a job that would mean a return to the blank, misery of wage slave life. He wants an escape from the banality of the limited options available to him. Then he meets the enigmatic Nelly B and her arty flatmate Zack. It is through their encouragement, that Jonny learns how to build an independent life in post credit-crunch Britain.

About the Author

Portsmouth based graphic novelist, Ryan Dodd, is 21 years old. A self- taught artist, Ryan was always drawing under his desk at his job with Her Majesty's Tax Inspectors. After enduring this for two long years, Ryan was encouraged by his friends to quit the 9 - 5 existence and dedicate his life to creating alternative Graphic Novels. His influences include, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Daniel Clowes, Joe Matt and Peter Bagge. But Ryan has also found inspiration in the novels of Phillip K Dick and Charles Bukowski. When Ryan is not making comics he enjoys all the usual stuff people his age do, like playing video games, going to the pub and sticking it to the man.

Its good to see the UK indi comic scene take risks and start to develop. This book certainly proves this point. The art style isn't like anything else; thick black lines, dark shadows and a mix of expressionistic backgrounds and detailed city backdrops, yet it most certainly is comic book art.

The story is about a bunch of guy friends all living lives reflective of most people today, with plenty of slacker guy humor. The hangover meter is hilarious! The protagonist Jonny though thinks there must be more to life then working 9-5 in a rubbish office job and through the course of the book and with the help of Nelly he finds a way to be happy. The ending is very touching and the last few pages are some damn fine work from the artist.

To try and liken it to other comics/graphic novels its part 'Scott Pilgrim' without the evil ex's, part 'Side Scrollers' buddy adventure and part 'Clerks' slacker humor.

For a fiver, just to get a glimpse of the new UK indi comic book scene you cant go wrong.

NB: Don't let the cover on Amazon fool you, this isn't the real cover, the real cover is in the pic beside it and reflects the artwork better. Don't know where this pic came from as it doesn't appear to be in the book.

Outstanding new talent, I discovered this thanks to a Forbidden Planet on-line review, and I'm really enjoying its slacker humour and original artwork.
