A superb book, the only book you will need to sound better, by practising the licks - and there are many - learn how to,develop your own but seeing how the licks are put together and most importantly 'listen' to what you play.

Hip Licks for Saxophone 16 Oct. 2012
By M. Sanders - Published on Amazon.com

The book simply delivers what its title says: "Hip Licks for Saxophone". What it doesn't tell you is this book can be used by any Bb, Eb or C instrument. The book comes with CDs for the Bb and Eb instruments. If you're a C instrument, just play a whole step down. Anyway, I am a guitarist and this book will certainly improve your vocabulary of lines and really help develop your ear. After working with this book, its off the pages and into your head. Highly recommend! Probably one of the best improv books out there. No scales, modes or exercises; just lines that you can use in your playing and sound like a pro.

A challenge for me 24 Mar. 2014
By Daniel 13 - Published on Amazon.com

I am getting kind of old but like to keep or improve my sax playing skills. I am also only a fair reader. So, I find this book a challenge. I don't know if a really skilled jazz musician would benefit from the licks as I am, but for a guy who usually rarely played any jazz other than some ballads and standards, the jazz language is becoming more familiar as I play these licks. I like the background C.D.s. The slow versions are challenging enough right now and I can see a lot of growth possible if I keep working at these, especially when I will tackle the faster speeds. I like to play both tenor, soprano and alto so its great it comes with both Bb and Eb versions. I have owned other jazz lick books but they didn't have the background tracks so I couldn't easily imagine how they sounded in the chord context. I'd have to try to match them with Aebersol tracks or make crude progressions on my keyboard with my limited piano skills. This is much more convenient. Playing in various keys is also a plus. So, an old blues/rock guy is enjoying expanding his horizons. It was a good purchase and I also ordered the vol. 2 in case I really get into this!

Highly recommended 26 May 2014
By Shawn - Published on Amazon.com

One of the best things I can say about these books is that I wish they were available 30 years ago!

But what Greg has done with his books is pretty amazing - he's composed these great and interesting melodic lines over commonly encountered chord progressions with terrific backing tracks in a variety of styles and tempos. For me, the lines really exemplify what works and sounds good. Essential and fundamentally sound "mainstream"/bebop jazz vocabulary. All of this makes these very practical to work with.

It's great being able to listen to and play along with the demo tracks. Hearing the line played with great articulation and phrasing makes a huge difference in comprehension. Playing in unison you can work to match phrasing, articulation.

You can also use the backing tracks as a springboard for your own melodic lines, creating your own phrases to learn them in all 12 keys. Greg has several videos on YouTube that demonstrate different ways to practice with these. For me this has been the most useful aspect of the jazz phrasing books - they effectively demonstrate how to construct good phrases. If you take the time to distill or condense some of the longer phrases into smaller building blocks, they point to a wealth of melodic material you could spend a lifetime assimilating into your own style.

There are many other books that cover "advanced" theoretical concepts such as chord substitution or systematic ways to approach outside playing. This is one of those books that can help you get really solid on fundamental concepts of improvisation and phrasing which work pretty much universally in swing, bebop, and mainstream jazz styles. The musical foundation that is essential before moving on to the more advanced techniques (and ultimately the foundation that makes it easier to apply said concepts). In my opinion, anyhow.

Great workout for saxophonists 16 Mar. 2014
By Charles R. Garzoli Jr. - Published on Amazon.com

Greg Fishman is an amazing saxophone player from Chicago, and an even more amazing teacher. He has compiled a series of hot licks that fit over various chord structures and challenge even professional players to master. Not only does Greg make this book available for alto and tenor sax players, but the accompanying CD's allow you you to play the same licks on either horn as the rhythm section parts are transposed, instead of the horn lines. In addition, Greg has made two CD's -- one in slow tempo and one in fast tempo. So, once you master the licks at the slow tempos, you can challenge yourself with the fast tempos. Not for the faint-hearted!
A great workout series by a great teacher.
