Product Description

Product Description

Refuting the myths that black youth are unable to excel at academics and are limited to careers in professional sports, rap music, or drug dealing, this motivational book aims to engage teens by bridging the gap between school and hip hop culture. Topics such as the ability for many youths to memorise rap lyrics verbatim and how those skills can translate into academia, are discussed along with more general issues, including peer pressure, media, sexuality, career development, and gang activity. Written in an adolescent-friendly style, this much-needed book for educators seeks a different way of approaching students.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for teenagers, 21 Feb 2008
This review is from: Hip Hop Street Curriculum: Keeping it Real (Paperback)
this book is so easy to read for teenagers and even i as an adult have learnt a thing or two.

it encourages teenages to think outside the box, the terms are mainly american, but seen as most of our influences come from the usa, the uk kids will be able to understand it - it provides good talking points as it asks questions? me and my two teenagers have had many discussions on some of the topics in here

4.0 out of 5 stars Hip Hop Curriculum, 20 Jun 2008
By Triceei "triceei" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hip Hop Street Curriculum: Keeping it Real (Paperback)
This particular book was very informative, enlightening and fun for the children. I run an African Centered Day Camp for 9 weeks and I am looking forward to implementing this curriculum. I encourage teachers, camp directors or administrators to review this book and pull out the pertinent information. It is really educational andyou wouldnot actually know that until you read it in its entirty. Dr. Kunjufu developed a winner, it peeked my interest.

Must get for parents of children that are infatuated with the hip hop culture. This book definitely explains the myths and realities of the hip hop culture.

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe this was published, 22 Dec 2008
By H. Ponthieux - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Hip Hop Street Curriculum: Keeping it Real (Paperback)
I ordered this book as part of a research project I was doing on African American students in the current curriculum. It's no secret that minorities and low income students are not given voice in the texts and programs schools use, but this book was a ridiculous disappointment. This book solidifies many of the stereotypes of Black culture and is a disgrace to multicultural pedagogy.
