For anyone wondering why hip-hop has outlasted other music genres such as punk rock, one should look no further than "Hip Hop America" I feel that this book is a definitive history of where this music/cultural movement has been, and a small hint of where it's going. Nelson George examines the connections between hip-hop and it's counterparts in "mainstream" culture(as in his previous effort, "Elevating the Game: Black Men and Basketball")from a ardent fan's perspetive. My only criticism is that its that George is so intimate with the subject that it keeps him from adopting the proper balance that is a must for any journalist of his stature. Despite its sometimes aggravating faults, this is a book that I highly reccomend for hip-hop novices and veterans alike.

When I ordered this book and first started to read it, I was expecting an almost chronological account of hip hop, a dedicated report of the history of the culture. However, what I got instead was a personal account of hip hop from Nelson George's perspective.
While he jumps around alot and does dwell on the "old skool" of hip hop, It is a very interesting account of someone who has had the fortune to not only live through the hip hop era from the very beginning, but also to have met some of the most important people within the industry.
If you really want to look at hip hop through the eyes of someone who has "been there, done that", I urge you to give this book a try.

Nelson George, possibly the most underrated music writer of our time, has done it again. "Hip Hop America" is a worthy successor to his classic "Death of Rhythm & Blues". If you're some [like me] who has never taken rap music seriously before, Nelson will make you sit up and take notice. Like Bill Rhoden in the NY Times, Nelson George may not be someone you always agree with, but he is a writer who commands respect and attention. His recent nomination for the National Book Critics Circle Award for "Hip Hop" is all the evidence you need.

Hip Hop America is the most interesting book I've ever read
