Dissections, ie how to cut a figure into pieces that can be put together into another geometric figure, is the base for many mathematical recrations.
In another book (Dissections : Plane and Fancy, ISBN 0521571979), Frederickson covers the art of dissections in general.
This new book focuses on a special type of dissections, where the limitation that the pieces must remain linked to each other is pursued.
Frederickson guides the reader through this fascinating world with the help of a large number of illustrations. The book covers the more or less traditional 2-dimensional hinged dissections, but also introduces what he calls "twisted hinges", where the 2.dimensional pieces also may be rotated in 3D (still with the linking limitation). He also extends the idea completely into 3D, where 3D bodies are dissected, hinged, and tranformed into other 3D objects.
All in all, this book (as well as his previous book on dissections) is a must for anyone fascinated by the wonderful world of recreational mathematics.
