Product Description

... if there is to be inter-religious theological conversation at all ... it is true that reason must be its presupposition and mainstay. Francis Clooney has written the definitive work on this in the context of the Hindu-Christian encounter. The book is therefore indispensable reading for any serious study on the topic. (Hindu-Christian Studies Bulletin)

Clooney's account is lucid and clearly argued, establishing a regular format with a neat juxtaposition of approaches and brief but well-focused summaries ... Theology which is so imaginative and so intelligent is a rare commodity these days. This is a book which deserves a wide readership. (Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society)

About the Author

Francis X. Clooney, S.J., is a Catholic priest and member of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). He is Parkman Professor of Divinity and Professor of Comparative Theology at Harvard Divinity School and was the first president of the Society for Hindu-Christian Studies.

Perhaps I was rather naive to expect it to be mostly about a comparison of Hindu God and Christian God since what came across as the most important area of discussion was how to actually do comparative theology rather than the content of the topic in question which was what I was interested in. The area I found the most interesting was the views of the Christian theologians under discussion whereas the comparison of the two areas and the Hindu theology I found laboured and rather unrewarding.

I wanted to know the relationship between the Hindus and the Christians. This book gave me the information I was looking for.
