Learning Hindi is not going to be easy. There is a new script to learn, multiple ways of writing the same vowel depending what comes before and after, new sounds and ways to produce them when speaking - so plenty of challenges! This book and cds looks well organised and thorough and should enable me to make good progress. The opening chapter of the book, which goes through all the things I've mentioned above, is clearly essential before you can get to the fun bits - situations and conversations in Hindi. The first chapter will have to be reread from time to time. The script will have to be learned and that will take a long time I think. But it will be worth it, and I think this book and cds is a well put together course, so I recommend it. I don't think there are any short cuts to learning Hindi!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good 23 July 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book jumps in quite quickly and you will need to learn the script to access the last half of the book. The CDs are quite good also, although they could do with English translations on the CD rather than just in the book. Overall, for the price this is a good value for money book/CD combination.

The accents on the CDs are mentioned in another review, I disagree and find them quite clear and realistic. (I am, as the name suggests, of Indian origin)

3.0 out of 5 stars Be aware of what you want... 15 Jan 2010
My plan was to learn to talk Hindi, not necessarily write.... The script is very difficult. From Chapter 5 the book doesn't give transliterations so if you haven't learned the Devangari script by then, it's difficult to follow the course..........

5.0 out of 5 stars Bahut Accha Hai! 27 Nov 2007

I just love this method soo much!
I had previously bought the Teach Yourself one, but after 6 months I finally got this one. And it's so much better!
the CDs (6 of them!)
are awesome, and the lessons are extremely clear and accurate. You can really feel your progresses throughout the different steps, with exercices and reviews.
The Cultural notes also are a very good point, and a huge advantage compared to other teach yourself stuff. It helps you keep your feets on the ground!

I definitely highly recommend it!

4.0 out of 5 stars very usefull for all beginners and not only 15 Mar 2008

I must say this book really covers all the Hindi basics and more and it's a must for beginners, probably easier to start with for them. I am advanced in Hindi and used it for the audio and revising some grammar. I must say I even discovered a few things I didn't know. The only thing may be that the conversations are a little boring and not very brilliant, but you don't expect to be entertained, right?

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Good 16 Aug 2008
By JB - Published on
This book is not for beginners. It is complex and inaccurate. The basic "alphabet" is wrong and it places complex conjugations in the introductory lesson without laying out fundamentals. My family members are native Hindi speakers and thought this book was horrible.
Also, within the first 25 pages of 300+pgs it jumps into fully written hindi only with little help in recognition and pronounciation.
The "lessons" on the CDs are not well integrated with the book and start with natives in little skits speaking very rapidly instead of having simple lessons on basic words and phrases.
There is a reason this book is on "sale".....

3.0 out of 5 stars good book, awful CDs 30 Nov 2011
By Philip Nikolayev - Published on
I disagree with the comment that the book is inaccurate or incompetent. It is an average Hindi textbook, perfectly useful and usable. I am an intermediate speaker of Hindi who used this volume to help brush up the language after a long interruption. On the other hand, it was a downright terrible (though cheap) decision to use computer-generated voices for the audio CDs. Not only do some of the voices sound like robotic space aliens speaking Hindi, the software is not smart enough and this results in misreadings and phonetic mistakes. You are better off NOT using the CDs.

3.0 out of 5 stars Difficult to get started 4 Mar 2010
By Charity Crabtree - Published on
I was very excited about this, despite being told by a Hindi-speaking friend to get audio only and not worry about learning the script, Devangari. I still think that learning the script is important, but after having this set for about 6 months, I am finally coming back to get a few books that will focus on the script. I can't really learn them concurrently as I'd planned, since as another reviewer stated, the lessons switch over to Devanagari-only (i.e. WITHOUT transliteration) way too soon. It has made it impossible for me to move forward past the first chapter and CD. I highly recommend you either stick to an audio-only program or learn Devanagari first.
