5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Value 29 Nov 2010
    By K. Wright VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Having never used a slow cooker before I had hoped the Hinari Lifestyle would be simple to use and come with some ideas of what to use it for. This model did both. First of all the main unit is surprisingly light and didn't take up too much room on the worktop. The removable ceramic pot which fits inside the cooker is of a good quality and it is dishwasher safe, along with the glass lid (ideal to see your dinner simmering away).

I chose to attempt the Lamb Casserole with Red Wine and Rosemary first of all from the accompanying recipe booklet. Due to the ingredients I had available I made a few alterations (added a parsnip, omitted the flour, used dried herbs rather than the bouquet garni.) The meal was quick to prepare with a total time of around 10 minutes in the saucepan to soften the vegetables and brown the meat before transferring to the slow cooker for 6 hours. The meal was absolutely delicious and the meat was so tender even with a cheap cut. With low and high settings it is easy to set your meal for the time required whether getting it ready before work or around lunchtime. The warming setting is also ideal if you are delayed in eating.

I am now going to try the Ratatouille and Sausage Casserole recipes. Whist there isn't a huge range of recipes in the booklet I think most kinds of meat and vegetables can be put into a casserole as long as you include at least 1 pint of liquid. Perfect for tasty, warm, home cooked food on cold winters evenings.

4.0 out of 5 stars Neat slow cooker 8 Jan 2010
This was a gift for my son in college. It's nice & neat and easy to use. For its first-time-out it was used to cook a tried & tested recipe, irish stew, which was great.

My own slow-cooker is a large Tower slow cooker. The main difference I found is when mine is on its "low" setting it's barely bubbling at all and I feel that if I inadvertently left it 6 hours too long, the food would be absolutely fine. The Hinari SC395SS on the other hand bubbled away merrily on the "low" setting, which made me wonder whether the food would taste really overdone if I left it a bit longer than intended to.

So far, though, it appears just the ticket. It doesn't take up much worktop space and it's easy to use.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Stew-pidly easy to use! 25 Nov 2010
By @GeekZilla9000 TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This slow cooker is a smallish model but still large enough to make a casserole for a small family, or provide a couple of generous portions for a couple! This is a cylindrical `tower' style slow cooker rather than oval, so roasting a chicken in here isn't easy but it's still possible. I use a slow cooker quite often and I'm impressed with this model. It's surprisingly small, but it's not bulky - so the ceramic bowl makes up most of the overall size. The handles on the side make it very easy to pick up and move in and out of the cupboard.

Like most over slow cookers it is incredibly easy to use, I tend to cook things on `low' for about 8 hours. That means that on particularly cold days I can go out for a few hours and come back to a beautiful meal. Cleaning is also easy, as the contents are invariably wet - a brief scrub with washing up liquid and a rinse is all that is required!

In a nutshell: I can't fault this, it performs the job brilliantly and is the perfect size for a couple or small family.

    3.0 out of 5 stars Venting......... 15 Dec 2010
    By b4-its-2-l8 TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Overall, this is quite a neat little cooker and does the job it sets to achieve, however, it could do it better. I like the compact shape and the fact it's round rather than oval I think is better but what lets this unit down is the way it lets the steam vent.

The removable ceramic bowl has 4 very shallow and narrow indentations spaced equally around its rim to allow steam to vent but they're not very effective on their own; instead, as the food bubbles away, the steam builds up and escapes in splutters from underneath the lightweight lid which causes a constant rattling throughout the cooking - pretty irritating if you have to listen to it for 8 hours! This rattling happens on both the low and high heat settings.

However, it's easy to solve the problem by weighting one side of the lid (we used a baking potato) ...ahhh, peace and quiet again, perfect!

Other than that flaw this is a fairly good little slow cooker; and would suit a small family, or a hungry couple, as long as you don't mind staying in whilst it's on. As for us, we wouldn't feel comfortable leaving the unit on and going out for the day

(PS - another reviewer mentioned a "timer" on the unit, so just for clarity, there is NO timer; only the off-low-high-warm settings).

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple and effective cooking 28 Nov 2010
It's around this time of year that our thoughts turn to hot winter foods, many of which are ideally cooked slowly over a long period of time. Enter the Hinari Lifestyle Slow Cooker.

This is the first slow cooker I've owned, and wasn't quite sure what to expect. I needn't have worried as the cooker is simplicity itself. There are two cooking heat settings: low and high, as well as a warming function which will re-heat food. I tried a beef and beer stew out of the included suggested recipe booklet. After around 8-9 hours slow cooking (on the low heat setting) it was ready (and delicious). Fantastic, a simple recipe cooked to perfection with no mess.

The internal ceramic bowl is easily removed and cleaned. My only criticism would be a lack of a timer. A similar function to a bread-maker in which it will start cooking at an allotted time would have been a welcome addition. However, this function is available on other models, so if this function is important to you, you can splash out on a more deluxe model.
