About the Author

Vanessa Betts is a writer and editor from England. She went to India in 1997, as the first stop on a round-the-world ticket, and then found out that nowhere else could quite compare. After time spent living and working in Australia, Egypt and England she has been based in India, chiefly in Kolkata, since March 2006.
Victoria McCulloch is a nomad currently calling Goa home. Armed with a laptop and a yoga mat, she plies her trade as freelance journalist and Kundalini Yoga teacher. She first ventured to India in 1997, but has been living in the 'motherland' for the last seven years and can now only drink her tea with masala in it. Victoria has also been influenced by the music and chanting in India and is recording her second mantra album.

Having spent nearly four months in the region I would say this book is trying too hard to do too much and as a result is a poor travel companion. Delhi and Kolcotta are merely stop offs for a typical traveller to the Himalaya and do not require or deserve so much coverage. A book called the India Himalaya should detail some of the astounding treks and terrain but these are hardly mentioned given the context of the title. The town maps are poor and the Information on prices and facilities are too much out of date for such a recent publication.

Furthermore, the regional differences within J&K are extreme but nothing is mentioned about this. For example, the food styles and cultural identities across the region are extremely varied. In Ladakh, there is a pronounced Tibetan theme to the cuisine and lifestyle but the book focuses on indian curries almost as though it just cut and pasted from a more generic India travel guide. It is also quite trite to convey Ladake as some hippy outpost. It is a vibrant and progressive region with an extraordinary cultural backdrop and containing bright, ambitious people. I have wondered if the writers spent much time if any here or if they just called up a few friends for information to spit back out again.

I have never written a book review but for the money this guide has not been helpful and has mostly remained in the bag while I worked things out for myself. Mind you, none of the guide books really are very well considered for this amazing, dynamic and extremely varied place that is and is not India all at once.
