Product Description

Product Description

The routes in this guide have been selected from four areas: Carneddau, Glyders, Snowdon and Outlying Areas (comprising Moelwyns, Eifionydd, Rhinogs, Cader Idris, Arans and Arenigs), each of which has its own peculiar charm. The areas also vary in terms of popularity. Snowdon attracts a lot of first-time visitors and is in constant use during holiday and weekend periods, while venturing into the lower and less rugged mountains outside the three main areas will mean meeting only a handful of people.

About the Author

Steve lived in Snowdonia for 20 years, during which he gained an intimate knowledge of walks and climbs in the region. Among a number of mountaineering books he wrote at this time, the best known is his highly influential and now classic Scrambles in Snowdonia, which was largely responsible for reviving interest in this esoteric sport. Forays beyond North Wales took him to the Dolomites, the Mont Blanc massif and Switzerland, where he briefly worked as a climbing instructor. A passion for rock climbing and scrambling extends to the rest of UK, with a particular fondness for gritstone. Very much an all-rounder, he was also a keen ice climber and supplemented Welsh waterfall routes with trips to Scotland, where he lists the 'big five' traditional Ben Nevis classics of Tower Ridge, Point Five Gully, Observatory Ridge, Zero Gully and North-East Buttress among his all-time favourites. For several years Steve was a columnist for High Mountain Sports and Country Living magazines. He currently works as an actor and playwright.

5.0 out of 5 stars A guide enticing you to explore further affield in Wales, 7 Sep 2006

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
A very informative beautifully illustrated guide that makes you want to visit the remotest parts of North Wales.

Most tourists and walkers alike stick to the Northern hills which include the Carneddau,Glyders and Snowdon. The more adventurous go to the Moelwyns and possibly the occasional trip to the rough Rhinogs. You will hardly find anyone tramping in The Arans,Berwyns,Arrenigs,or the wildest parts of central wales around Plumlymon.

Most of these outlying mountain ranges involve a great deal of planning ahead, there are few if any recocnisable paths especially in The Arrans.I for one have lived in Wales all my life but have yet to walk the Rhinogs let alone the Berwyns or Arrenigs, these are trully remote areas where even on a busy bank holiday you will see nobody except for that rare backpacker camping wild.

This well written guide gives you detailed walks in every outlying area,so all the ground work has been done all you have to do is get there and try the routes in fair weather because most of these walks involve very remote and hostile areas in inclement weather.

2.0 out of 5 stars Beginner beware!, 29 Jul 2006
By Jon Beeching (Canterbury, Kent, ENGLAND) - See all my reviews

Steve Ashton has compiled a fairly comprehensive catalogue of Snowdonia walking routes within this book. Much the same as other books dedicated to walking in North Wales this one concentrates on the Carneddeau, Glydereau and Snowdon ranges, there are a few other less known routes at the end of the book but they have a kind of "afterthought" feel to them.
For the experienced walker/scrambler this publication could provide some useful information for trying out new routes but for the less expereinced or novice walker it could prove somewhat misleading and possibly even dangerous.
There are Ordinance Survey map extracts to accompany each walking route but in the grand scheme of things they aren't really practical for navigating out in the mountains and only provide an indication of the area to look at on the full scale map that all walkers should have with them.
Mr Ashton's timings are a little optimistic to say the least and could easily lead the novice into thinking a route can be completed in just a few hours when in fact it may well take them all day, this could become dangerous in the shorter winter days and result in someone trying to navigate their way down a mountain in the dark. For safety's sake I would advise doubling the timings in the book!
Additionally Steve Ashton's descriptions need more of a frame of reference and standard to them, he may well think that a particular route should provide no problems or involve no real scrambling, but others may well think that working their way over rocks, scree and boulders using their hands is indeed scrambling and could prove problematic.
A lot of the routes in this book could be considered as classic I guess and many more seasoned Snowdonia walkers will have probably completed all of them by now. If this publication were aimed at the experienced walker then it could certainly be considered sufficient for the job, but it is not, there is nothing in the book to indicate the experience level needed to complete the routes safely and so one would have to assume it is aimed at anyone. As such this makes it potentially dangerous, should a first time visitor to Snowdonia pick up this publication and head for Crib Goch, the North Ridge of Tryfan, Bristly Ridge or Y Llewedd?? I certainly hope not!
