5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely excellent 5 Jun 2013

"Hilliers" is the bible of nurserymen, as much of an institution in its field as Wisden or the Oxford English Dictionary. The original form, The Hillier Manual of Trees and Shrubs, is dense with text and has no pictures. The print is small, technical terms are plentiful. Serious gardeners, and those in the trade, will buy it, despite the price, because it has absolutely everything in it.

Don't get me wrong, this 'Hilliers Lite' is still a detailed, wide-ranging book for the serious gardener. But some of the very obscure plants - those you're not going to want to buy anyway - have been omitted and every page is studded with photos- modest in size but clear and relevant. This is a book you can stick in a bag (it's too big for a pocket) and take to the garden centre or specialist nursery with you. The information in it is concise, to the point and utterly authoritative - and at your fingertips a lot quicker then using Google on your smartphone.

So what does it offer? It starts with a guide to the technical terms, symbols and abbreviations used in the main text. These may irritate at first but get used to them; they do save a heck of a lot of time and space. Then there is a brief section which will help you choose trees, shrubs and climbers suitable for your requirements. This information is given in the form of charts or tables (in the Manual they are given as a series of lists) which actually make it easy to pinpoint the right plants to look at, even if the layout has you craning your neck a bit. For example - say you have clay soil, are near the coast, and want a shrub with purple foliage? Running a ruler or card down the chart enables you to pinpoint any suitable plants very quickly.

A valuable reference book on the shelf although 'Googling a question' is becoming as productive. Good for browsing in conjunction with other books + Google.

4.0 out of 5 stars A picture laden reference 26 Jan 2014

This turned out to be a hard copy of a paperback I already have and not the Hillier manual I was looking for. This book (in paperback) although dated (doesn't include the most modern plants available) is my constant companion when buying plants or visiting gardens with mature specimens. It has certainly helped me over the years to make some careful decisions on selections and planting options. It is a real pity that these excellent Hilliers references don't seem to be currently published and updated.
