More About the Author

Paul Kater was born in the Netherlands in 1960. He quickly developed a feel for languages but did not pursue a career in those as his native language, Dutch, did not offer many options in that time.

Since 2003 he's been writing more seriously, first posting his scribblings on an amateur writer's mailing list, and then publishing shorter and longer stories on the World Wide Internet.

Paul currently lives in Cuijk, in the Netherlands, with his books, two cats and the many characters he's developed in the past years, who claim he is a figment of their imagination.

Latest book accomplished: "Francis and Frankie".

Nice idea for a short story and could have been really good but badly let down by the terrible writing. One minute the witch is transported from another era/fairytale realm with NO knowledge of the present or any of our modern inventions and then straight away is saying modern 'New York' slang/swearing expressions. Then again the witch is back to being ignorant of our modern world. And again and again and again the character moves from old fashioned to modern expressions without ANY experience of our modern world/life. Spelling mistakes are common and usage of the wrong word/s is sending me nuts! I'm three quarters of the way through this and am looking to give up on it soon as it annoys me soooooooo much. I am just pleased I only paid a tiny amount (0.69p) for this as I would have hated to pay for a full priced book. The author should re-read this, get someone else to proof it and make amendments before putting it up for sale again!!!!!

I downloaded this book as it was free, and expected it to be a long novel, but actually it was more of a Novella or a long short story. The idea is great, a bad witch from another land is transported in to the human realm, (A bit like the film Enchanted) and has to get home again, so along the way she meets various people before finally going home. It could have been brilliant, but I wanted more - there were some nice touches, coffee and brooms' to name but two, but it just didn't go far enough and the characters weren't fully developed enough. Still for a free book, it was certainly better than some I have read, and if the author had more time, I am sure this book could be a lot lot better.

Interesting little story. Best read with an open mind - some of the language is a bit strong. Admittedly its not Dickens or even Poe, but despite that, its no where near as bad as one of the reviewers made out & and as an added bonus, it was free to download!

A good enough plot and characters who are strong enough in this short story to be developed further - maybe the author ought to try a longer novel? Because its a short story, things seem to happen & be resolved fairly quickly without too much explanation - however, this does allow for further expansion - rewritten or even a sequel. I thought there were some humourous moments, and some nice ways of presenting the ordinary in a more extraordinary way, but no spoilers here - all humour/interpretation is different for different folk.

Give it a go, and while away an hour sitting in the sun with a good glass of wine!

In answer to 'Angie & Nick' there should be no luck involved - when I bought books for my kids I always looked at them first, (indeed I checked books that were given as presents)as a matter of course, before giving them to my kids.

I usually read romantic comedy, biographies and crime - this appealed to my current "try something completely different" mood. The story intrigued me - a witch lost in another dimension having to use her magic powers to get home.

I didn't think I was going to like Hilda's character - trying to incant a poison apple spell on a young, innocent woman didn't really endear her to me but once the story got going I found I was rooting for her to find her way back to her magic kingdom! I found her to be cantankerous, impatient and demanding rather than evil and, as soon as she took on the bullies she grew on me! Ok, she took out a few people who got in her way - but she was in a strange world and she just wanted to go home!

I liked the story: I agree with all the previous reviewers who comment on the stilted language, grammar and lack of flow, but the actual story was, for me, well thought out, and the fault lies in the (lack of) editing. For a free download, I really enjoyed it.

I downloaded this book for my 7 year old thinking it was a childrens book. Luckily enough I went through a few pages before giving it to her to read and thank god I did. The amount of curse words in just a few pages was over the top and definately NOT a childrens book. This review is mainly just a warning to others who are like minded and were thinking about getting it for their kids.
