Not being experienced in walking elsewhere then the peak distrcit or the lakes, I was slightly apprehensive when encountering a self organised walking holiday in Italy.

Having read the reviews I decided on this book. It must be said that this was well worth the money. Easy reading and well described allowed our holiday to be one of the most enjoyable holidays I have had. The book recommends hotels which now by experience are well chosen. The walks decribed are extremely accurate and the local maps are hard pushed to make any walk easier. I will definately use these type books for further "adventures"!

The guide is helpful for those areas it covers, which, given the size of Italy, is very limited. Still, the pointers on maps and such are useful and the walks chosen picturesque. The time estimates are bit low, however.

I'm going on a walk in Italy and bought this book in preparation. The book only covers walks in the most popular areas. The area I want to walk in (Foreste Casentinesi) has almost no information about it but I knew that before I bought the book so I can live with that.

In fact I really bought the book as a sort of introduction to backpacking in Italy. Unfortunately it doesn't work very well for that as it is missing vital information. For instance the map I got at the same time says "Posto tappa" in lots of places. That's a word that's not explained in the book. In fact there is a glossary but it's only two pages long. The same goes for how and where to get fuel for a camping stove. If you are camping and arrive by air, you cannot bring any fuel but have to buy it locally. What kinds of fuel is available in what types of shops? Could I get a petrol stove and buy some fuel at a petrol station? Are butane/propane mixes in small canisters widely available at camping sites? I have no idea and the authors aren't telling. I could go on but I think I've made my point, this book needs to be fleshed out with considerable detail. It is essentially trying to be both a guidebook to specific walks and an introduction to hiking in Italy. It fails on the latter account, how it fares on the former I'll tell you once I've done some of the hikes. No doubt later editions will have the same level of detail that for instance Lonely Planet's London book has but for now it's pretty superficial.
