Highwire Act Live In St Louis 2003 is a two-disc record of Little Feat live in St Louis in 2003; part of an increasing trend of simultaneous audio-visual releases, it's the soundtrack to the DVD of the same name. These days the seven-member line-up still contains five veterans of the band's classic 1970s incarnation--guitarist Paul Barrere, bassist Kenny Gradney, drummer Richie Hayward, pianist Bill Payne and singer/percussionist Sam Clayton--now augmented by female singer Shaun Murphy and guitarist/trumpeter/mandolinist Fred Tackett. Little Feat may lack the eccentric guiding light of founder Lowell George, but they haven't forgotten how to put on a show. They play impeccably, of course, as befits a group consisting largely of session musicians, and the newer material here is slick and polished. But naturally enough it's the old songs that really bring proceedings to life: notably the extended improvisatory work-outs of "Dixie Chicken" and "Fat Man in the Bathtub", and the crowd-pleasing laid-back country-rock of "Willin'". The DVD has the obvious attraction of seeing as well as hearing, but Feat fans may find this CD set ideal for the car. --Mark Walker

Format:Audio CD
The number of Little Feat live albums seems to at least equal their studio output and, of the ones I have heard, "Highwire Act" is up there with the best. Quite a bit of the material on here also appears on the "Waiting for Columbus"set, when the late (and greatly missed) Lowell George was with the band - whilst Lowell was an irreplaceable artist, these latter versions (most notably "Oh Atlanta", "Old Folks' Boogie", and "Skin It Back") differ enough to be worthy of inclusion. Instrumentally, the entire band is in top gear throughout, the twin guitars of Fred Tackett and Paul Barrere soaring over the powerhouse rhythm section of Bill Payne, Kenny Gradney, and the superb Richie Hayward (my favourite rock drummer, bar none). My only criticism is that, occasionally, Shaun Murphy's vocals get a little histrionic, but for the most part she is in fine voice. All told, this is yet another blistering live set from the Feat, and I wish I'd been present!!!

Worth buying just for Time Loves A Hero/Day and Night

A typically powerful set from Little Feat -- the interplay between Paul Barerre and Fred Tackett throughout this performance is amazing to behold, and all the rest of the Featsters make great contributions as well -- buy this album, buy the DVD of the same show, and make sure to catch them live when they come to your town -- as a friend always says, for a great night on the town, see Little Feat.
