4.0 out of 5 stars Fantasy gamebook in post-apocalyptic setting 5 Feb 2007
By ldxar1
Format:Paperback
A persistent problem haunts attempts to transfer the gamebook format (Lone Wolf, Fighting Fantasy) into settings other than genre-fantasy, including modern, sci-fi, and apocalyptic settings. The problem is that high technology - guns, bombs, cars - tend to offer sudden death; the turn-based, points-based combat system becomes less viable, and authors are forced to choose between very difficult and cruel gamebooks where a failed throw means instant death, and unrealistic events where a bullet through the skull causes a few hitpoints of damage. Both problems sadly haunt this effort, by Lone Wolf series author Joe Dever, to transfer his gamebook mechanics into a Mad Max style world of cars, gangs and post-nuclear wastelands. There's a frustrating number of times where failed rolls lead to death, and a lot of other occasions where an apparently fatal event turns out to be far less than fatal.

The game mechanics are actually more complex than Lone Wolf, with the basic hand-to-hand combat system supplemented by separate rules for firearms combat, AD&D-style rollable stats such as Stealth and Perception, new rules for keeping track of ammo, medicines and water, and more besides. Each comes into play only a few times - for instance, there are far less hand-to-hand combats than in Lone Wolf gamebooks - which has the effect of overloading on game mechanics, though also adding variety.

The structure and objective are very simple - heading across a post-apocalyptic southern America towards the goal of California, meanwhile avoiding or defeating rampaging gangs and other obstacles. Compared to Lone Wolf, the scenario lacks depth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highway Holocaust reviewed 26 Feb 2004
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Being a huge fan of Joe Dever's Lone Wolf series, I was very much looking forward to the Freeway Warrior books, and I was not disappointed at all. Joe Dever shows that he can write great fantasy books, whatever the genre, as this semi-futuristic series is just as good as the fantasy/semi-mythic Lone Wolf series. Highway Holocaust is a great book, that effectively starts off the story of Cal Phoenix and the DC1 colony. The tone is eerie to begin with, as you don't know what awaits you. As certain key storyline developments occur, a real sense of foreboding overcomes you, as you begin to realise that things are about to get a lot worse for Cal. The first book, while not immediately a great read, becomes such, when it is clear that it is part of a much greater picture that just a single book. Indeed, as a first book in a series, it is one of the best I have ever read. As you progress through the book, you get a real sense of humanity and of feeling from the main characters. Indeed, it is this which really puts the plot twist at the end into perspective. In the end, this book is a great read, and I really believe that all fans of novels and of great storytelling will enjoy Highway Holocaust, and I cannot recommend it enough.
5.0 out of 5 stars The series is complete 9 April 2013

I read these books when they first came out in the 80s. Unlike the Lone Wolf books written in a fantasy world, this series is set in near-future America. Very much like the Lone Wolf books, these were addicting and I read them several times. In a few years I plan to share them with my nephew. In the meantime, I may have to relive an adventure. Thanks to Joe Dever for enriching my childhood!!!
5.0 out of 5 stars Best of Dever 16 Oct 2010

I think Joe Dever's Freeway Warrior books are much better than his widely known and loved Lone Wolf series. This first book is particularly very good too. No sloppy, simple wording, or the feeling that you've already read this before a thousand times. You really won't know, what's gonna happen on the next page. This is as well written as a real book, and you can also play with it! Awesome stuff; highly recommended!
