Every one of Free's albums holds a special place in both my vinyl and cd collections. This wonderful record is no different. Every band is in imperious form on these songs and it shows on every track. From the sexy grooves of "Stealer" and "Ride a Pony", to the soulful, beautiful "Be My Friend", to the heart-wrenching "Love you So" ( which is to be played at my funeral )every second is perfection. There's a raw, live feel to the album, with so much space and room in the playing. The metronomic Kirke supports the interweaving lines of Kossoff and Fraser as the genius of Paul soars above.
Kossoff's understated mastery is unique. When you listen to him, truly less is more. And no question, Paul Rogers is the greatest rock singer who ever drew breath. Every phrase seems to be torn from his soul.
Young musicians, open your ears and your minds, and marvel. This is rock music as it should be played and so seldom is anymore.

well, what can i say, i have to listen to this album on my own, i just cannot hold back the tears, i must look a mess, koss is my hero, master of feeling by a mile, as one reviewer put it, more is less,paul is still singing like a god, pity bout the queen thing !!!!!!the album has everything anyone needs to sooth and excite them, dont even look at the price tag just buy,,,,and leave this planet happy, and yes i want love you so, to be played at my funeral, hope i dont wake up in the coffin.

Highway, Free (2001 Island Remaster) - Classic British Rock from the masters of the genre.

This was the fourth album from one of Britain's finest rock groups, Free. Following from `Fire and Water', their greatest achievement, expectations were high. Something pretty special was required, and that is what was delivered.
Again, the main strengths of the band are the superb songwriting, the vocals of Paul Rodgers and the insistent, driving bass of Andy Fraser. Backed by the pounding drums of Simon Kirke and the guitar heroics of Paul Kossoff, this is classic British Rock of the highest order. With tracks such as `Bodie' and `The Stealer' there is a more reflective tone starting to come through. This more mature and grown up sound really suits the group, making this a classic album well worth obtaining.
This is one of the 2001 Island remaster releases of all Free's albums. The sound has been restored beautifully. It's nowhere near as murky as my old copy, and allows the contribution of each band member to be heard in perfect clarity. There is a set bonus material - alternate takes, BBC sessions and a contemporary single, `My Brother Jake', another classic record. There is an interesting essay about the band, which really adds to the set. As an added bonus, if you collect all the discs in the set the spines form a picture.

Free again
Finally acquired a CD version of an LP I loved in my youth (ie while I was at university in the 70s) and was not disappointed. What a wonderful nostalgia ride. Read more

Before you die you NEED to hear Highway !!
The songs, the feel and the playing on Highway are truely outstanding.

awesome album
by received wisdom, this is supposed to be one of free`s lesser albums, coming on the heels of "fire and water" and it`s success. this view, in my opinion, is rubbish. Read more
