I bought this from MHP Computer Services; given that this is a generic item, my comments might not apply those supplied by other vendors.

Although the item description doesn't mention a driver CD, it did in fact come with a mini-CD in the packaging. But there were no instructions and the CD contained drivers for about a dozen different products, with no indication which was which.

Eventually I worked out that I needed to run "USB TO RS232.exe" in the directory "\DRIVER\DATA CABLE DRIVER\USB Interface Link DRIVER\USR2309A(PL-2303)" before plugging in the cable.

Then when you plug in the cable Windows automatically installs the correct drivers, and you can access the serial port. On my machine it was listed as COM4. You can see which port it's using by going to Start->Settings->Control Panel->System->Hardware->Device Manager->Ports (COM & LPT) and looking for "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port".

So all-in-all a good product, once I got it working. But it loses a star for not having any installation instructions.

I hope my instructions help someone!

Very happy with this cable which (after a bit of messing about) I now have working perfectly under Windows 7 64 bit.

Here's what worked for me.
1. I couldn't read the little driver CD on my computer so I just ignored it.

2. Pluged the cable in and let Windows try to find a driver from Windows Update. This failed, but then the Action Centre popped up and pointed me to a driver file on the Prolific website.

3. Downloaded "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v1210.zip" as suggested by the Action centre. All installed OK, but on plugging the cable in I got a message "This device cannot start (code 10)".

4. Ran the install again, and chose the "remove" option.

5. Visited the Prolific website and downloaded "PL2303_Prolific_DriverInstaller_v130.zip" which is the latest version. Installing this version produced exactly the same error as V1210, so I removed it too.

6. Using Google I found this site: [...] which pointed me to [...]

7. With some trepidation I downloaded the file, virus checked it and ran the install. Install ran OK, so I plugged the cable in and it immediately started working perfectly !

Hopefully someone will find these instructions useful. The only reason I list the early steps is that they may work for you, and it's always nicer to use a driver from the manufacturer rather than a third party. BUT... the "cooldrives.com" file worked for me !

I understood from the product description that a Windows 7 driver was included. This was not the case, so I contacted the vendor. They have replied to say they will look into it, but to date, I haven't had any further info. OK on other OSs. Disappointing.

Purchased this via 'Star eShop' for 4.35 in December 2009. It arrived just in a Jiffy bag with the cable and no drivers or other information. I tried it on my WinXP SP3 laptop first and no drivers could be found and thus it didn't work. I then tried it on a Vista laptop, same result. Finally just tried on my new Windows 7 Enterprise laptop (which is what I originally purchased it for use with) with the same result again. Searching the web I found the latest drivers on the Prolific website but they don't work on any of the laptops either (the port is never installed properly in Device Manager). Other web searches revealed similar problems so I tried an older driver with no luck. I then tried an even older one (this did install the port with no error in Device Manager but the port did not work anyway).

Star eShop via the Amazon Merchant e-mail system initially said it should plug and play, no drivers needed. That's clearly cobblers. However, credit to them in that they then offered me a full refund when I pointed that out. However, since the outlay was so low it wasn't worth the hassle and time for me to go down that road.

Avoid unless you have drivers with it.

I'm going to try a different purchase on Amazon instead.

The driver supplied with this cable adapter is not compatible with Windows 7 and so is official version downloadable from the Prolific website. After much heartache and trying multiple trials of older versions I discovered that the v10518 is the most reliable version and guaranteed to work. I was about to return the cable adapter as faulty before this version worked.

It's been a long time since my PC had serial ports as standard. So when I needed to connect my old GPS unit to a serial port I thought I was stymied, but this useful gadget did the necessary. It certainly works with Vista (32b) and also with Windows 7 (64b)

I have Garmin E Trex GPS and as everyone who has tried to connect to a PC knows. the device needs a D port to Serial connector. This item connects the serial to a USB port. As many other have written it does not work as the driver that comes on the CD will not work with Windows 7. I tried the various driver download sites from other reviewers but whilst I can now see the driver as working I cannot see the files on the Garmin. Save your money and do not buy.
