Book Description

2 Nov 2007
Lachlan Maclean will do whatever it takes to protect his clan–even if it means abducting the most willful woman in the Highlands with the secret intention of wooing her for marriage. A born searing sensual leader possessing brute strength, and an imposing command, Lachlan is unprepared for the beautiful spitfire Flora MacLeod, who jeopardizes his plans to save his clan, and digs beneath his hard, chiseled exterior to expose a tenderness that may be his undoing.

The greatest marriage prize in the Highlands, Flora is determined at all costs to avoid her mother’s fate of being bartered away as a political pawn. Vowing to make her captor pay for his ruthlessness, she boldly engages him in a battle of wills, sweetening the challenge with dangerous passion–even as the lingering curse and deadly ghosts of a past tragedy reach out to thwart a tender love that has yet to be spoken.

5.0 out of 5 stars action-packed and powerfully sensual 26 Sep 2007
Format:Mass Market Paperback
In Monica McCarty's newest release, Highlander Unmasked, we meet Alex MacLeod, who's traveling to the royal court in Edinburgh, Scotland. Alex is on a secret mission to learn the greedy English king's plot to gain control of the rugged, mountainous Highlands, which have belonged to Alex's family and other clans for centuries.

Although he's honorable, Alex has been living as an outlaw for years -- he wants his life to be punishing and empty to make up for a horrible mistake he made years before. So, when he rescues a young woman from a violent attack, he's awestruck by the instant, emotional attraction he feels for her.

Reserved and bookish, Meg Mackinnon is amazed that she's drawn to the fierce and mysterious warrior who rescues her, then leaves her side without a word. But when she sees him again at the royal court, she's confused and hurt; Alex pretends they've never met before.

Meg's at the royal court for one reason: She needs to find a husband. Her brother is emotionally challenged, so she wants to marry a strong warrior who'll support her brother in his duties when the boy becomes clan chief.

When Meg forces Alex to acknowledge her, he goes to great lengths to convince her he's anything but the kind of husband she needs. And as Alex tries to ignore the powerful feelings Meg's admiration stirs in him, he faces a decision: Win the noble battle for Highland justice, or lose the war for the happiness he and Meg deserve.

Highlander Unchained by Monica McCarty as well as my other favorite historical romance novel-The Fates by Tino Georgiou, are a delight. They're thrilling and passionate love stories set within real historical times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highlander Unchained 2 Jun 2010
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Elizabeth Campbell McLean's cruel husband had left her to die by drowning on a rock in the Firth of Lorn as the water was rising and she was unable to swim. She swore a curse that no McLean Chief would prosper without a Campbell by his side. Saved by Campbell fishermen, she was taken back to her Clan and when her husband arrived to tell of her demise her brother killed him and ripped an amulet from around his neck. Lady Elizabeth's legacy lived on, passed down from generation to generation through the amulet.

A hundred years later, Flora MacLeod, halfsister to Rory 'Highlander Untamed' and Alex 'Highlander Unmasked' and the daughter of a Campbell is kidnapped by Lachlan Maclean .......... Wonderful story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Missed the mark 29 July 2012

I'm afraid this is another miss for me on the great pendulum of hits and misses that these two trilogies have become.

It all boils down to the romance and how much you care, how much you believe it, feel it. And this just didn't do anything for me. I think my main problem was the lack of build up. It went from lust + aggravation to
"love" within the snap of my fingers with not nearly enough development to make it realistic. In fact, the pair barely spoke to one another. They avoided each other while she got up to her "pranks" (more on that in a minute), and he would also go off fighting and not mention anything about it to her. Then suddenly Bam! they're in love? Plus, the fact that he had it in mind to marry her for personal/political reasons right from the word go, also sapped all of the romance out of it.

Now onto the characterization. Flora is meant to be this great beauty but also a complete hellion, spitfire, wildcat, etc. A nightmare most men won't overlook even with her pretty face and large tocher. WHERE THE HELL WAS THIS SHOWN? I'm telling you, she got up to a couple of little tricks- using the wrong oil on his swords and salting his dinner- but apart from that she was as drippy, weepy and pathetic as any damsel in distress has ever been. I was so disappointed in this aspect. I love my feisty heroines and that's what I felt like I was being promised, and I did not get it. She's the Holyrood hellion"? Then I'm a Prima Ballerina. She didn't even complain about his leman (mistress, bit on the side)? Shyeah. Right.
